- Scope and content:
- This fonds includes a large collection of copies of commissarial decrees regarding the settlement of debts of Jewish kahals of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth compiled by Mikołaj Kazimierz Treter (1730-75), a clerk of the Stężyca land (Sandomierz voivodeship), in 1765 and organised after his death by his son Stanisław Kajetan Treter. These materials represent a selection of copies included within a broader collection of legal and business documents related to the activities of Mikołaj Kazimierz Treter and his wife Barbara Chojecka. The fonds also contains documents pertaining to relations between Stanisław Kajetan Treter and individual Jews, including agreements with leaseholders regarding the sale of alcoholic beverages, salt, tobacco, and meat in the town of Wojcieszków (contracts for business permits; registries and inventories of breweries and taverns, 1782-83); materials pertaining to a property dispute with Wulf Itskovich, a tavern-keeper in the village of Ruda (Lukowo area) (complaints; reports by a court bailiff [woźny]; lists of claims; debt registers; 1785-86); complaints against Solomon Fulman alleging the infliction of material damage to Stanisław Kajetan Treter (1821); etc.
- Archival history:
- The collector and compiler of the archive on which this fonds is based was Stanisław Kajetan Treter (1744-1823), who was assisted by his brother Baltazar and his nephew Alexander. They collected documents from the 16th to the early 19th century on the history of this family and related noble families. The collection continued to be updated with new documents through the first third of the twentieth century.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Polish noble family Treter is descended from the Poznań townsman Jakub (1520-1607), whose son Tomasz Treter (1547-1610) became a prominent canon and was granted Roman nobility (entitled to use the arms of Pope Gregory XIII), while Tomasz’s nephew Maciej Kazimierz Treter (1623-92) was granted noble status in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The family included prominent historians, art critics, and high-ranking officials.
