Documents in this fonds that pertain to Jewish history are found in both series. They may be provisionally divided into two groups:
1) Materials on the pogrom against Jews in Lwów in November 1918. These include a report (the author’s name is not indicated) on anti-Jewish rioting in the city from 22-23 November 1918 and on the behaviour of the Jewish population during armed clashes between Polish and Ukrainian forces (1918); a report of the command of a Lwów brigade [of Polish military forces] on the economic reasons for anti-Jewish sentiment in Galicia and the “unpatriotic” position of Lwów Jewry regarding the revival of Polish statehood, which are said to have caused the pogrom in Lwów and its tragic consequences (1918); a report by the head of the health service of the Polish military command in Lwów on his talks with a Dr. Meysels on rendering medical assistance to victims of the pogrom in Lwów and arranging for the burial of those killed (1919); a memorandum by area lawyer Dr. Ashkenazi of the Anglo-French Mission about the pogrom in Lwów, and his correspondence with the legal attaché of the Polish Army of Eastern Galicia command to clarify certain facts regarding the “criminal activity” against the Jews of Lwów, which he writes about in his memorandum, as well as an anonymous statement to the command of the Lwów brigade [of Polish armed forces] on measures taken to prevent anti-Jewish riots; a collection of (typewritten copies) of documents and newspaper articles titled “Chwila Documents” (referring to the Lwów newspaper Chwila), parts II – III (1933), on the November 1918 pogrom in Lwów; a statement by Lwów lawyer Dr. O. Wasser regarding the distorted interpretation found in a piece by Prof. Jakubski, published in the first volume of the collection of documents and materials The Defence of Lwów, of the events of November 1918 in Lwów, in particular, regarding the burning of the Lwów Jewish Temple (1934); etc.
2) Documents shedding light on Ukrainian-Jewish relations, including copies of a letter from the Jewish National Council of Eastern Galicia on adding Jewish members to the tax commission of the government of the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic (ZUNR) and an appeal by the Husiatyn and Kopychyntsi/Kopyczyńce Jewish National Councils to the ZUNR State Secretariat requesting emergency material assistance for the Jewish population of the city of Husiatyn and town of Kopychyntsi/Kopyczyńce; a statement by the Jewish National Council of Eastern Galicia addressed to the ZUNR State Secretariat in the city of Stanislav/Stanisławów to protest the confiscation of Austrian currency among the Jewish population, and an order by the ZUNR president to a government representative in Vienna directing that an appeal be made to the senate of the University of Vienna in connection with a memorandum by the delegation of the Jewish National Council in Vienna concerning the expulsion of Eastern Galician Jewish students from the university (1919); a notification from the leadership of the Jewish Security Committee (Department) in Lwów to the command of the Polish Military Organisation to the effect that representatives of Jewish parties and organisations had decided to maintain neutrality in the Polish-Ukrainian conflict and were organising a Jewish militia to protect the life and property of Jews until the situation in the city normalised (1918); an order by the command of the Polish Army’s “Sanok-Chyrów” expeditionary detachment to the board of the Jewish religious community of the city of Ustrzyki Dolne regarding payment of a penalty imposed due to Jewish participation in Ukrainian military formations (1919); etc.
The fonds also contains appeals from the Kamieniec Committee of the Zionist People’s Party Tse’irei Zion and the Kamieniec Podolski Jewish Civil Administration to the Jewish population in connection with the San Remo Conference’s recognition of the right of the Jewish people to Palestine (1920) and a celebratory program [this refers to the postwar conference of the Supreme Council of the Entente Powers and their allies that took place in April 1920 in the Italian city of San Remo; it was on the basis of decisions taken here that the League of Nations in 1922 assigned the Palestine mandate to the United Kingdom, justifying this with reference to the need to “establish the political, administrative, and economic conditions in the country for the secure founding of a Jewish national home”]; and a poster for a performance of the play Dos glik [Happiness] [Dos groyse glik] (1897), by the Polish writer Stanisławów Przybyszewski] at the Kamieniec Podolski Jewish Drama Theatre (1920).
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Established in September 1928 on the initiative of the Bureau of Military History in Warsaw, the Society for the Study of the History of the Defence of Lwów and the Southeastern Voivodeships in Lwów brought together Polish generals and officers, leaders of the local state administration and government, and archivists, historians, and periodical editors. Its coverage area was the territory of the Lwów, Tarnopol, Stanisławów, and Volhynia voivodeships, and part of the Lublin and Krakow voivodeships. Through its research commission, the society collected and analysed documents pertaining to the Ukrainian-Polish War of 1918-19, the Soviet-Polish War of 1920, and memoirs and journals of participants in these events. Until the outbreak of the Second World War, the society published three volumes of documents and materials entitled The Defense of Lwów, 1-22 November 1918. It had its own archive (documents housed were mostly copies), as well as a library. It ceased operations in September 1939.
