- Administrative/biographical history:
- A crown Jewish school (first rank) was established in 1851 in the town of Mstislavl’ (Mogilev province) as a two-year primary school. It was under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education and part of the St. Petersburg school district. The curriculum included both Jewish subjects (study of the prayer book, the Bible, the Mishnah, the fundamentals of Halakha and Jewish ethics), as well as general subjects in Russian corresponding to those taught in parish schools. Rabbi B. V. Dubnow (grandfather of the prominent historian Simon Dubnow) was elected honorary trustee of the school by the Jewish community of Mstislavl’. In 1873, it was reorganized as a Jewish elementary school. It was closed in 1874 as a result of the reorganization of the state Jewish education system.
