Housed in the fonds are mainly photographic images by M. Kheifets, Iu. Aleinikov, A. Nadel’, T. Kotova, and others (negatives and prints; and digitised copies stored on compact discs), as well as posters from exhibits, concerts, lectures, etc.; monthly programs of the Jewish Community Center of St. Petersburg; conference pamphlets; newspaper and journal clippings; etc. The fonds’ materials may be provisionally divided into the following thematic groups:
1) Photo-materials from various events organised by the Jewish Community Center of St. Petersburg, including memorial ceremonies held at St. Petersburg’s Jewish (Preobrazhenskii) Cemetery (1999-2012) and at V. A. Sidur’s “Formula for Grief” monument in the city of Pushkin (2000-08); Jewish book festivals in St. Petersburg (1997-2012); literary evenings with Ia. Gordin, editor of the journal Zvezda (2001), the Yiddish-language poet Velvl Chernin (2003), and the prose writer Dina Rubina (2007); sessions of the youth Yiddish club Afn pripetshik (2001); etc.; a festival titled “Shalom, Jerusalem (The Creative Intelligentsia of St. Petersburg on Jerusalem’s 3,000th Anniversary),” organised by the Jewish Association of St. Petersburg and the Jewish Community Center of St. Petersburg (1996); the international seminar-festivals “Klez-fest in St. Petersburg” (1997-2008); the winter and spring Klezshtetl camps (2000-06); “Klezshul with Michael Alpert”; concerts at various venues of St. Petersburg, and in particular, “Children from the Jewish Street” at the Actors’ House (1999) and the Shuvalov Palace (2001); Konstantin Kotel’nikov’s “From Jewish Melodies” at the House of Friendship; the Theatrical Sketch Show “Purim in Hollywood”; “If I Forget Thee, Jerusalem” at the Philharmonic Grand Hall; “Jews and Eurasia” at the Actors’ House (2002); “Hanukkah with Nekhama Lifshitsaite”; Adrienne Cooper and Zalman Mlotek at the Beloselskii-Belozerskii Palace; the Nigun ensemble at the Chesed Avraham Center; “Jewish Folk Songs” at the Samoilov Memorial Apartment Museum (2003); Michael Alpert (2004); Frank London at Petersburg clubs (2005); the Kle-Zemer ensemble (1999-2012); etc.
Also included are exhibits held at the hall of the Jewish Community Center of St. Petersburg featuring the artists and photographers Aron Zinshtein, Aleksandr Rokhlin, Mikhail Kheifets, Iurii Aleinikov, and others; conferences and seminars on Jewish culture and history, and in particular, “Lutherans and Jews in Russia” (2002); “The Rise and Development of Jewish Professional Music in Russia. In Memory of the Composer Moisei Mil’ner (1886-1953)” at the Russian Institute of Art History (2003); “One Hundred Years of Education at the Petersburg Jewish Folk Music Society” (2008); “The Society for the Protection of the Health of the Jewish Population (OZE): 100 Years of History” (2011); etc.; presentations of new books and documentaries, including the film By the Waters of Babylon (2003); celebrations of the Jewish holidays Purim, Hanukkah, and Passover at the Jewish Community Center of St. Petersburg (2000-07); newspaper and magazine clippings with photographic images from reportage on Jewish events (1993-2014), including from Sankt-Peterburgskie vedomosti, Nevskoe vremia, Evreiskii Peterburg [Jewish Petersburg], Vechernii Peterburg, Izvestiia, Gorod, The Petersburg Times, Afn shvel (New York), The Yiddish Forward, Idud Khasadim, Birobidzhaner shtern, Turan, Ami – My People, Tekiah, Shofar Povol’zh’ia [The Volga Shofar]; etc.
2) photographic images of authors and staff of the journal The People of the Book in the World of Books, including: D. Goberman, L. Aizenshtat, E. Moroz, B. Frezinskii, A. Frenkel’, V. Dymshits, M. Kheifets, A. L’vov, I. Bulatovskii, V. Shubinskii, M. Mel’tsin, A. Rokhlin, and others; and group photographic images (1998-2014).
3) The archive of the video studio Ayin [The Eye], including advertising materials, among them booklets and posters from multimedia concerts and showings of documentaries; scripts of documentaries; newspaper clippings with coverage of the studio’s activities; a poster, booklet, and guestbook from the “Way of Life” photo exhibit (participants were studio members N. Avanesov, E. Brodskaia, A. Gluz, A. Drozdov, S. Ermolenkova, Kh. Konovalova, E. Kramskaia, O. Mirkina, A. Rasskazova, I. Trushevskii, M. Tyntarev, D. Kheinman, M. Efros); photographic images of studio activities and participants; a list of pieces in the video almanac-series “Jewish Petersburg” (1998-2000); lists and questionnaire forms of the studio’s members; financial documents; etc. (1998-2003).
- Archival history:
- The Jewish Community Center of St. Petersburg (EOTs SPB) was organised in the first half of the 1990s on the initiative of A. S. Frenkel’, who subsequently became its director; it was based on several programs (a library, a lecture series) associated with the Jewish Association of St. Petersburg (EASP; from 1990-92, the Leningrad Jewish Association, LEA) that arose during the post-perestroika period. Although formally still a subsection of the Jewish Association of St. Petersburg, it has operated under its present title as in effect a separate organization since 1995. It was registered in 2005 according to a charter approved for the formation of the legal entity “The ‘Jewish Community Center of St. Petersburg’ Fund.” Its primary mission and objectives are to promote the study of Jewish languages and the history and culture of the Jewish people; establish a special library and phono- and video-collections; hold cultural events; and publish literature on Jewish history and culture. Over the years of its operations, it has turned into an important center of Jewish life in the city, regularly hosting lectures, literary evenings, video showings, concerts, exhibits, etc. The Jewish Community Center of St. Petersburg also includes the Kinder-yorn youth studio-theater, the “Our Traditions” Sunday school, and the Center for Jewish Music. The Jewish Community Center’s most important programs include the annual Jewish Book Festival (inaugurated in 1997); the annual Jewish music festival “Klez-fest in St. Petersburg,” an influential international forum attended by leading performers of Klezmer music and Yiddish songs from countries of the former USSR, as well as Western Europe and the US (1997-2008); international research conferences on the history of Jewish music (1998, 2003, 2008); and international piano and composition competitions (1999-2004). Since 1995, the Jewish Community Center of St. Petersburg has published The People of the Book in the World of Books, a bimonthly journal of literary criticism and bibliography devoted specifically to Jewish book-publishing in the former Soviet Union.
