- Scope and content:
- Pertaining to Jewish history and culture in the fonds are photographic portraits of well-known representatives of Jewish culture during the Russian imperial and Soviet periods. Among these are a photograph (undated) of the composer and pianist A. G. Rubinshtein (1829-94); photos of the pianist Iosif (Iuzef) Gofman (1876-1957), one of which is a joint photo with Sergei Rachmaninoff (1912; undated); a photographic portrait (1916) of D. S. Shor (1867-1942), a pianist, music teacher and performer, and participant of the Zionist movement in Russia who in 1927 settled in Tel Aviv, where he organised the Music Education Administration and the Institute for Musical Culture and Education; a photo on a postcard addressed to M. Menes in Riga (23 January 1915); a photo of F. Ia. Zaslavskii (d. 1953), conductor and director of the Beethoven Symphony Orchestra (US) (1927-29) and the Paris Symphony Orchestra (1930s); photos from 1913-14 of M. I. Brian (nee Shmargoner; 1886-1965), an opera singer (lyric soprano) who performed in concerts of Jewish folk, religious, and secular music, and in particular, at a concert on 12 February 1922 at the Bolshoi Opera Theater of the Petrograd People’s House; a photographic portrait of M. O. Reizen (1895-1992), an opera singer and soloist of the Bolshoi Theater of the USSR who was one of the few Soviet Jewish cultural figures who refused to sign the letter to Joseph Stalin in February 1953 by which Jews were to show their loyalty by denouncing the “Doctors’ Plot”; as well as photographic portraits of theatrical artists, and in particular, of E. M. Vol’f-Izrail’ (1897-1975), an actress of the Alexander Theater (undated); Z. N. Raikh (1894-1939), drama actress and the wife of V. E. Meyerhold (1939); and A. I. Raikin (1911-87), theatre, variety, and movie actor, theatre director, and People’s Artist of the USSR (undated).
