- Housed in the fonds’ section “Materials of various persons” are Russian translations (by an unidentified person) titled “From the Hebrew poet of the Middle Ages, the Spaniard Judah Halevi” (undated).
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Nikolai Fedorovich Shcherbina (1821-69) was a poet. He studied at a secondary school [gimnaziia] in the city of Taganrog, but due to poverty was unable to graduate from Khar’kov University. In the 1840s, he published poems and articles in periodicals; and in 1849 he published the collection Greek Poems (Odessa). From 1850-55 he served as assistant editor of the Moscow Provincial Record. In 1855 he settled in St. Petersburg, where he was appointed a special-assignments officer working for the deputy minister of education (1855-69). In 1857 he published a Complete Poems in two volumes. In 1865, N. F. Shcherbina’s The Bee [Pchela]: An Anthology for Popular Reading and Study was published; it was subsequently reprinted numerous times.
