- The fonds’ materials are distributed according to the following sections: “Manuscripts of research works,” “Biographical materials,” and “Correspondence” of N. S. Tagantsev. Documents pertaining to the history of Jews in Russia are found mainly in the “Correspondence” section; these include letters to N. S. Tagantsev that deal with Jewish issues, from P. I. Veinberg (1891-1907); A. V. Gizetti (1892-93), Ia. G. Gurevich (1897), V. N. Kokovtsov (1875-1917), V. V. Miklashevskii (1873-1910), K. A. Posse (1898-1918), V. D. Spasovich (1872-1903), M. M. Stasiulevich (1880-1906), E. I. Utin (1885), and others. Also housed in the fonds are memoirs by N. S. Tagantsev titled “The Past” (1919) and “Long Past” (1920), and his journal of the 1920s, which reflects N. S. Tagantsev’s views on the solution of “the Jewish question” in Russia.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Nikolai Stepanovich Tagantsev (1843-1923) was a jurist, criminologist, and statesman. He graduated from the St. Petersburg University law school in 1862. From 1867-82 he taught at various educational institutions of St. Petersburg, including the university, the Law Academy, and the Alexander Lyceum. In 1867 he defended a master’s thesis titled “On Recidivism.” In 1870, upon defending his dissertation “On Crimes against Life according to Russian Law,” he received the degree of doctor of criminal law. In the 1870s he was involved in the commission on reorganising prisons. In 1881 he was appointed a member of the Justice Ministry’s advisory service, and he joined the commission to draft a new criminal code. From 1890 on, he chaired the commission to draft preliminary proposals to review Finnish criminal legislation; and in 1894 he became a member of the commission to review judicial legislation, and at the same time chaired the section on reviewing the code of criminal procedure. In 1887 he became a senator in the Senate’s appellate department, and in 1897 he became this department’s presiding member. In 1903 he received the rank of actual privy councillor, and was appointed a member of the Justice Ministry’s commission to develop the new criminal code. In 1906 he became a member of the State Council.
