- Administrative/biographical history:
- Vladimir Vasil’evich Stasov (1824-1906) was an artist, historian (specialising in art history), theatre and music critic, and public figure. He graduated from the St. Petersburg Law Academy in 1843. He became deputy secretary of the Senate’s Surveying Department that same year; in 1848, secretary of the Heraldry Department; and from 1850 on he was assistant counsel in the Department of Justice. In 1848 he was temporarily removed from his post, arrested, and imprisoned in the Peter and Paul Fortress due to his connection with the Petrashevskii circle. He retired from government service in 1851. In 1856 he became an associate at the Imperial Public Library; and from 1872-1906 he headed its arts and technology department. In 1900 he was elected an honorary member of the Imperial Academy of Sciences. He was the author of critical studies and research on art and literature, including Jewish art. He provided assistance to several Jewish artists, sculptors, and writers: M. M. Antokol’skii, I. Ia. Gintsburg, S. Ia. Marshak, and others. V. V. Stasov dealt with the distinctness of Jewish art in his works “The Jewish Tribe in the Creation of European Art” (Jewish Library vols. 3, 5, 6, 1873-78); “On a Translation of Nathan the Wise” (Jewish Library vol. 7, 1879); the album Hebrew Ornamentation in Manuscripts of the Imperial Public Library in St. Petersburg (co-written with D.
