- [The fonds was being processed when this description was written; information given is as of 30 December 2014.] The fonds includes biographical materials of E. E. Mandel’shtam (1946-65; 1970s); his personal documents; screenplays of popular-science films; contracts for screenplays, reviews of them, and materials used in writing them (1960s); documents accumulated by E. E. Mandel’shtam in his capacity as chair of the Leningrad branch of the Moscow Society of Drama Writers and Composers (1929-32); correspondence with film studios and private individuals, including V. S. Aksenov, V. E. Al’tshuler, N. I. Zhinkin, M. M. Zoshchenko, M. M. Kligman, and others; photographs; and materials of other persons. Documents pertaining to Jewish history and culture include an autobiographical essay by E. E. Mandel’shtam which adduces episodes from the life of his family in St. Petersburg, reminiscences of his brother Osip Mandel’shtam and the poetry thereof, etc.; autobiographical statements by and evaluations of E. E. Mandel’shtam and his screenplay cowriters N. I. Zhinkin and D. S. Danin (1970); an album of biographical materials collected between 1913-50, including invitations to film showings/symposia, All-Union Communist Party cell meetings, and literary evening events held by the Moscow Society of Drama Writers and Composers; movie posters; theatre programs, tickets, permits; etc.; newspaper clippings containing articles on movies and the theatre; letters from M. M. Kligman; etc.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Evgenii Emil’evich Mandel’shtam (1898-1979) was an epidemiologist and screenwriter; he was the younger brother of the poet Osip Mandel’shtam. During the Second World War he served as an army epidemiologist. In 1946 he began his film career, first as an editor and consultant, and from 1958 as a screenwriter. He wrote the screenplays for the popular-science films On the Threshold of Consciousness (1958; co-written with N. I. Zhinkin); A Chance at Life (1863); In the Depths of the Living (1966; co-written with N. I. Zhinkin and D. S. Danin); and others. In 1967 he was awarded the Vasil’ev Brothers State Prize of the RSFSR.
