- The inventory’s first section contains biographical materials, including drafts of the charter of the Petersburg Jewish Literary-Artistic Group, which M. M. Bernshtein composed in Yiddish (1915); and of the “Announcement of the formation of the Petrograd Jewish Literary Group,” which indicates its mission and gives a list of its founders (1921-23). The second section includes works by M. M. Bernshtein: his original poetry and prose compositions in Yiddish – particular poems, poetry collections, long narrative poems, fables, poetic treatments of Jewish legends, stories; reviews and articles, and in particular, “Toward the Question of Transcription” (1930s); “The Art of Translation,” and others; Yiddish translations of works by A. S. Pushkin (1920s-30s): fragments of drafts and variants of the full text of the novel in verse Eugene Onegin, the long narrative poems The Bronze Horseman and Poltava, the ballad Song of Prophetic Oleg; particular scenes from the tragedy Boris Godunov; lists of particular poems, including from Pushkin’s early (Lycée) lyric; Yiddish translations of works by other Russian poets: K. Bal’mont; A. V. Kol’tsov, M. Iu. Lermontov, A. N. Maikov, D. S. Merezhkovskii, N. A. Nekrasov, F. I. Tiutchev, and A. A. Fet (1910s-30s); translations of works by foreign authors, and in particular, fragments of Goethe’s tragedy Faust; draft fragments of a translation of Longfellow’s narrative poem The Song of Hiawatha, a ballad by Adam Mickiewicz, etc. (1910-30s). The third section contains materials M. M. Bernshtein used in preparing his Yiddish-language works: draft fragments of dramas; materials toward an anthology of Russian poetry; outlines of particular stories; notes on Yiddish dialectology; and fragments of a Hebrew-Yiddish dictionary (1910s-30s). The fourth section houses M. M. Bernshtein’s voluminous Yiddish-language correspondence, including letters to him (1910s-30s). The fifth section includes pictorial materials, and in particular, photography by M. M. Bernshtein (1933-34). The sixth section includes materials of other persons, among them reminiscences by M. I. Berdichevskii [Mikhah Yosef Berdyczewski] titled “The Geyser” (1910s); N. Lure’s story “What a Wonderful Little Head” (1910s); etc.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Moisei Meierovich Bernshtein (1878-1942) was a poet and translator, and an electrical engineer by training. Over the course of many years he performed Yiddish translations of poems by A. S. Pushkin, M. Iu. Lermontov, K. D. Bal’mont, A. V. Kol’tsov, A. N. Maikov, D. S. Merezhkovskii, N. A. Nekrasov, V. I. Tumanskii, F. I. Tiutchev, A. A. Fet, and other Russian poets. These materials make up most of the M. M. Bernshtein fonds, which was donated to the library in 1968 by his daughter L. M. Bernshtein.
