- The fonds contains the following materials on Jewish history: originals and copies of “An appeal by the Provisional Lithuanian-Polish Government to the population of the territory of the Minsk province occupied by the forces of Napoleon” and other materials of the Provisional Lithuanian-Polish Government that contain mention of “ungrateful Jews” engaged in espionage for the Russian high command (July-August 1812); descriptions of judicial documents on the Jews of Brest and Grodno for 1556-1710, and in particular, “A confirmation of the royal privileges granted to the Jews of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania,” “A bailiff’s report on the killing of a Christian townsman’s son in the town of Voshka by the Jews there,” “The complaint filed by the Jewish woman Hanna Iusevna against Rafal Zvol’skii, manager of the Byten’ estate, for driving her husband from the taverns and mines that they were renting in the town of Byten’ (August 1566); “A register by Rabbi Shmuel Pinkhasovich of various items of his stolen by Grodno Jews” (November 1700); “Instructions of Hetman Prince Michał Wiśniowiecki to the Grodno kahal on the payment of taxes” (July 1706); “An acknowledgement issued by Michał Porawski to Nison Iakubovich foreswearing any claim of the former regarding the sudden decease of his daughter Tat’iana” (May 1710); etc.; materials used by P. A. Gil’tebrandt in preparing the publication A Collection of Monuments of Folk Art in the Northwestern Territory (Vil’na, 1866) that contain information on Jews (1860s); etc.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Petr Andreevich Gil’tebrandt (1840-1905) was a historian and folklorist who served as assistant archivist of the Central Archive of Old Registers of the Vil’na, Kovno, Grodno, and Minsk Provinces (1865-71). From 1871-93 he was a member of the Ministry of Education’s Archeographic Commission; and from 1893 on he held the post of commission administrator. From 1884-1903 he served as editor at the St. Petersburg Synodal printing office. From 1897-1905 he was a special-assignments officer for the Ministry of Education. He was the editor of A Collection of Monuments of Folk Art in the Northwestern Territory (Vil’na, 1866).
