- Materials pertaining to Jewish history and culture are concentrated in the second and third sections of the inventory: “Works of G. N. Timofeev” and “Correspondence.” These include, in particular, a letter from the composer Iu. D. Engel’ [Yo’el Engel] to G. N. Timofeev in connection with Timofeev’s preparation of an encyclopaedia article on Engel (1909); the manuscript of Timofeev’s article on Yo’el Engel for the Great Encyclopedia of S. Iuzhakov, which mentions Engel’s activities in collecting and studying Jewish folk songs (1909); a letter to G. N. Timofeev from the Jewish Folk Music Society on that organisation’s letterhead requesting a review of a published collection of musical pieces (1912); a note to G. N. Timofeev on the business card of I. M. Knorozovskii, who in his capacity as chair of the Jewish Folk Music Society was providing Timofeev with a ticket to a Society-organised concert (undated); letters to G. N. Timofeev from I. Ia Gintsburg (1908, 1909), M. A. Gol’denblium (1911), I. V. Gessen (1912), М. М. Margolin (1912), Z. А. Vengerova (1913), S. А. Vengerov (1913), and others.

Grigorii Nikolaevich Timofeev (1866-1918) was a music critic. In 1883 he graduated from the Alexander Cadet Corps, and in 1885, from the Paul Military Academy. From 1885-1902 he served in the military. In the 1890s he began to write music criticism and reviews; his pieces appeared in Russkaia muzikal’naia gazeta, Vestnik inostrannoi literatury, Russkii vestnik, Vestnik Evropy, Russkaia mysl’, Sovremennik, and other publications. From 1906 on, he covered music as a staff member of the newspaper Rech’. He was a board member of the People’s Conservatory and member of the Society of Music Writers. His main works were: P. I. Chaikovskii as Music Critic (St. Petersburg, 1899); Frédéric Chopin (St. Petersburg, 1899); and A. A. Aliab’ev: A Sketch of His Life and Work (Moscow, 1912).
G. N. Timofeev’s wife Mariia Vladimirovna Ianova (nee Baksheeva; by her first marriage, Ianova; 1867-1942) was a singer (mezzo soprano). In 1895 she graduated from the singing performance department of the Rapgof Courses in Music and Drama founded in 1882 by the well-known pianist and teacher E. P. Rapgof. In the 1890s-1910s she performed in concerts and taught.
