- Administrative/biographical history:
- This was established in 1778 in connection with the founding of the city of Kherson. It was to monitor the import and export of goods, the implementation of customs legislation, and the defence of the Russian Empire’s political and socioeconomic interests. Upon changes in Kherson’s status as a seaport, the customs house’s status changed as well. From 1825-62 it was called the Kherson Customs Post, and was under the jurisdiction of the Odessa Customs Area; in the latter period of its operations (from 1913-20), it was called the Kherson Customs House (2nd class), and was under the jurisdiction of the Odessa customs inspector’s administration.
