- Administrative/biographical history:
- This was established in August 1940 in Akkerman to oversee archival institutions of the Akkerman region (which was renamed the Izmail region on 7 December of the same year upon the transfer of its administrative centre from Akkerman to Izmail). The department was tasked with the organisation of a network of state archives in the region to house documents of institutions that had been in operation in the southern part of the Bessarabia province in 1812-1917, as well as in 1918-40, when this territory was part of Romania. The department was liquidated in February 1954 upon the dissolution of the Izmail region.
