- Among personal papers of R. A. Shuvalov housed here are manuscript articles on Vladimir Jabotinsky and reviews of vol. 1 of A Book in Memory of the Jewish Warriors Who Fell in Battles against Nazism in 1941-45 (1994); articles by Shuvalov that were published in the mid-1990s in the Odessa Jewish newspaper Or Sameakh on prominent Jewish writers with Odessa ties (Sholom Aleichem, Ḥayim Naḥman Bialik, and Shimen Frug); and on the French artist Paul Leroy (1860-1942), who presented the city with the gift of a painting whose subject was from the history of the Jewish people; newspaper clippings of articles by other authors (on the People’s Will activist Hesia Helfman; Odessa addresses of Vladimir Jabotinsky; the difficulties of memorialising victims of mass shootings of the Jewish population in the territory of Transnistria; etc.); and bibliographic excerpts and copies of archival documents (including a selection of materials on Vladimir Jabotinsky). There are also lists compiled by Shuvalov of locations of the mass destruction of the Jewish population in the Odessa and Nikolaev regions, and notes on same, photographs of monuments, and reproductions of matsevas; lists of Jewish cultural monuments that have been preserved in Odessa, and addresses thereof; historical information compiled by M. B. Kal’nitskii on Kiev’s Galician Synagogue; and Kal’nitskii’s “Methodological Recommendations on Collecting Materials for the Purpose of Returning (Restituting) Jewish Community Property” (1994); etc.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Roman Alekseevich Shuvalov (1911-2002) was a researcher of local history and a member of the Oddesica section of the Odessa Scholars’ House. Born in Odessa, he studied at seven-year school no. 3 and the Metal vocational school (1926-29). He worked as a technician at Odessa’s V. I. Lenin Machine-Tool Factory (1929-33); and served in the Red Army from 1933-36. He was also a graduate of the Odessa Communications Institute. He was a veteran of the Second World War, at the end of which he was serving as an engineer in Prague with the rank of captain. He was awarded various orders and medals. After his demobilisation from the army in 1951 he worked in engineering positions at Odessa electronics and radio-technology enterprises for thirty years, until his retirement. In the early 1980s, he began to conduct research pertaining to various aspects of the history of Odessa, particularly its Jewish community. He authored and edited several books and guides, as well as numerous periodical articles. He died in Odessa.
