- Documents housed in the fonds include (op. 1) filled-out questionnaire sheets containing, in particular, information on Jewish and Karaite organisations of various sociopolitical tendencies that had appeared in this period in the Kherson, Podolia, and Bessarabia provinces and in Crimea, and on their relations with other ethnic-based organisations; and on monetary amounts pertaining to the “Freedom Bond” as subscribed to by Jewish and Karaite communities in Evpatoriia and Evpatoriia county. [The “Freedom Bond” was a five-percent domestic bond issued in March 1917 by the Provisional Government to raise funds for measures aimed at annihilating the old regime and constructing the new one, and to combat runaway inflation.] There is also a letter (dated 29 May 1917) of the executive bureau of the Odessa Municipal Public Committee to the Odessa committee of the Bund requesting that work pertaining to the commission to analyse files of the former gendarmerie administration be intensified.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- This was formed after the February Revolution of 1917 when representatives of political parties and public organisations extant in Odessa came together to take up the task of governing the city. At its 26 August 1917 session, the Odessa Municipal Public Committee declared its period of authority ceased, insofar as “the majority of the committee’s functions have passed by law to the new Duma, and its remaining functions are to be transferred to a government commissar.”
