- Included are reports of the Nikolaev Provincial Education Department’s subsection on schools on closing cheders and “clerical schools” in synagogues and replacing them with Jewish labour schools (1920); of the national minorities subsection of the Kherson County Education Department on opening, in the city of Kherson, a Jewish department at the city’s Fröbel courses and at the Education Institute, and opening a Yiddish theatre and Jewish workers’ and peasants’ club (including a musical-drama school); and on the organisation of three-month courses for Jewish teachers in Kherson and training personnel to run the city’s two Jewish kindergartens (1920-21); statistical information on the number of children age four to eighteen in the city of Nikolaev, including by ethnicity and language (1920); minutes of sessions of the provincial education department’s national minorities section, which, among other things, took up the issue of the language barrier hindering interaction between Jewish children and children of other nationalities in kindergartens, and also in Nikolaev’s children’s shelter No. 7 (1921-22); reports on operations of labour school No. 32, and on its reorganisation such that all subjects would be taught in Yiddish; and on operations of Nikolaev’s children’s shelter No. 9, which was sponsored by the Jewish section; and lists of pupils and children at both institutions, with information on their family and social status (1922); etc.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Formed in February 1920, this was under the jurisdiction of the Ukrainian SSR People’s Commissariat of Education. It had oversight of county education departments. It organised general-education institutions and children’s shelters and colonies, and monitored operations thereof. It included several subdivisions and a national minorities section. It was dissolved in December 1922 upon the liquidation of the Nikolaev province.
