- Included (op. 1d, The USSR Council of Ministers’ Council on Religious Cults Plenipotentiary for the Cherkassy Region) is information on the presence in the Cherkassy region of registered Jewish communities and religious facilities, and of unregistered religious groups (1958-65). There is also a finding of the plenipotentiary regarding consideration of a request by a group of believers to renew activities of the synagogue in the city of Smela (1956).
- Administrative/biographical history:
- This was established with the formation of the Cherkassy region by edict of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the USSR (7 January 1954). It was elected at regular convocations of the regional council. In 1963-64, pursuant to an edict of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the Ukrainian SSR (30 December 1962), it was divided into executive committees of agricultural and industrial regional councils of toilers’ deputies (in accordance with an edict of the same body 10 December 1964, the industrial and agricultural regional executive committees were once again merged); and upon the adoption of the Constitution of the USSR of 1977, it was called the executive committee of the regional council of people’s deputies. In connection with the implementation (20 March 1992) of the Ukrainian Law on the Representative of the President of Ukraine, the activities of the executive committee were halted, and pursuant to the Statute on Local State Administration, the Cherkassy Regional State Administration was established on its basis.
