Included are author’s manuscripts of her Biblically-themed poems: “Ievreis’ka melodiia” (“Ty ne mii! rozluchyv nas dalekii tvii krai….”) (1896); “U pustyni” (“In the Wilderness,” 1898); “Prokliattia Rakhili. Apokryf.” (“Rachel’s Curse. An Apocryphon,” [1898]); “Iakby ia znav, shcho im nema riatunku….” [1898]; “The Sacrifice” (1900); “Saul (A Monologue)” (1900); “Zavzhdy ternovyi vinets’ bude krashchyim nizh tsars’ka korona…” (1900); poems from the cycle Ievreis’ki melodii (Jewish Melodies, 1899-1901); “Plach Ieremii” (1902); Shcho dast’ nam sylu? (Apokrif) (1903); from the cycle Tryptykh: “Dochka Iiefaia” (1904); “Izrael’ v Iegypti” (1904); “I ty kolys’ borolas’, mov Izrael’” (1904); “Prorok (Z bibliinykh motyviv)” (“The Prophet (From Biblical Motifs),” 1906).
Also included are long narrative-dramatic works that deal with the history of the Jewish people: Oderzhyma (Possessed, 1901); Vavylons’kyi polon (The Babylonian Captivity, 1903); Na ruinakh (1904); V domu roboty, v kraini nevoli (1906); Na poli krovi (In the Field of Blood, 1909); a translation of a passage from the Book of Genesis [1890s]; the article “Utopiia v beletrystytsi” (“The Utopia in Fiction”), containing a brief analysis of the Biblical Books of the Prophets (1906); and a textbook Lesia Ukrainka compiled for her little sister Ol’ga Kosach titled Starodavnia istoriia skhidnykh narodiv (Ancient History of Eastern Peoples, 1890); etc.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Ukrainian writer, translator, and public figure Lesia Ukrainka (a pseudonym; actual full name: Larisa Petrovna Kosach-Kvitka; 1871-1913) was the daughter of Olena Pchilka. She made her debut as a poet in 1884, and authored the collections of poems and long verse narratives Na krylakh pisen’ (On Wings of Songs, 1893), Dumy i mrii (Thoughts and Dreams, 1899), and Vidhuki (Reverberations, 1902). In a relatively brief period (1896-1913), she wrote more than twenty dramatic works that represented a new phenomenon in Ukrainian drama in their expression of pressing philosophical and moral-ethical issues.
