- Materials housed in the fonds include manuscripts of Hanna Barvinok’s work “Zhydivs’kyi kripak. Uryvok z podorozhzhia” (“The Jewish Serf. A Travel Fragment,” 1861), and a draft of the story “Zakokhana u zhyda” (“In Love with a Jew,” 1860s).
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Ukrainian writer Hanna Barvinok (a pseudonym; actual full name: Aleksandra Mikhailovna Belozerskaia-Kulish) (1828-1911) was born and died in the hamlet of Motronovka (Borzna county; now part of the village of Olenivka/Olenovka, Borzna district, Chernihiv/Chernigov region). She was married (from 1847 on) to the Ukrainian writer P. A. Kulish. She began her literary activities in the 1860s with stories printed in the almanac Khata and journal Osnova on the hard lot of peasant women. Her writings were subsequently published in the journals Kievskaia starina and Rus’ka khata, the almanacs Rada, Pershyi vinok, etc. Particularly remarkable was her knowledge of folk ways and customs.
