- The fonds contains manuscript reminiscences by the collection creator that mention, in particular, the forming of “brigades” at the Kiev General Secondary School to defend Jews during the 1905 pogrom; and the Beilis case (M. Beilis’s defence attorney; V. G. Korolenko and the epigram ascribed to him concerning the prosecutor O. Iu. Vipper; the subsequent fate of Beilis and his relatives; and the witness for the prosecution, V. Cheberiak).

The zoologist, ornithologist, and educator Nikolai Vasil’evich Sharleman’ (1887-1970) was born in the city of Kremenchug (Poltava province; now Kremenchuk/Kremenchug, Poltava region). He studied at the Kiev General Secondary School [realschule, real’noe uchilishche] (1896-1905) and the Kiev Polytechnic Institute’s agronomy department (1906-10). In 1908, he was elected the research secretary of the K. Kessler Ornithological Society of Kiev, and held this post until the society was closed in 1917. He was one of the founders of the Dnepr Biological Station (1912).
During the Beilis trial, Sharleman’ served as a witness for the defence, due to the fact that as a naturalist he knew well the location where the murder that would help spread the “blood libel” had taken place; this led to his vilification in the Black Hundreds press. He subsequently worked as an entomologist at the Kiev Agricultural Society; a zoologist and conservation researcher for the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences’ zoology office (later museum) (1919); and from 1930 on, he headed the Zoology Institute’s department of faunistics and systematisation. In 1937 he defended his doctoral dissertation (the textbook Zoological Geography of the Ukrainian SSR); and in 1938 he became a professor of applied zoology. In 1943, the Nazis sent Sharleman’ and other employees of the Zoology Institute to Poznań, and then to Germany.
Upon returning to the Soviet Union, he worked (from 1946 on) at the Ukrainian SSR Council of Ministers’ Main Administration for Hunting, and at the Kiev Flora Protection Station. He taught at the Kiev Forestry Institute, and was a member of the Commission to Study the Natural Resources of Ukraine and a full member of the Ukrainian branch of the Geographic Society of the USSR. He died in Kiev. Aside from his works on zoology, zoological geography, evolution, and environmental conservation, Nikolai Sharleman’ also authored several scholarly works and publications on landmarks of cultural history, and in particular, seventeen works on the Lay of Igor’s Campaign.
