Included are manuscripts and scholarly works by Avraham Harkavy, including from his time as a student: “Toward a History of the Khazar Khanate”; “Names of Peoples, Countries, Cities, Mountains, Rivers, and Seas in a Letter of Joseph, King of the Khazars, in a Manuscript Variant”; research on the history and traditions of Karaites and Krymchaks: “On the Karaites”; “Documents on the History of Lithuanian Karaites (from the First Firkovich Collection)”; “Toward a History of Karaitism” (from Ancient Hebrew and Arabic Manuscripts)”; a description of the collection of Avraam Firkovich, and articles polemicising with the latter’s research, including “On the Antonin Collection”; “Arabic Manuscripts of the Second Firkovich Collection (Per its New Arrangement)”; “A Catalog of the Samaritan Antiquities of the Firkovich Collection”; “A Brief List and Description of Arabic Manuscripts. The First Firkovich Collection”; “A Description of the Manuscripts of the First Firkovich Collection” (twenty-one notebooks); “A Brief List and Description of Arabic Manuscripts. The Second Firkovich Collection”; etc.
A separate group of materials in the fonds consists of research writings on Jewish history, bibliography, and the study of sources on Jews in the Russian Empire: “Notes to Graetz’s History”; “Fragments and Preliminary Notes on Bibliography, and Lists of Manuscripts and Books Recommended for Individuals and Institutions”; and Harkavy’s preliminary notes and comments on the book A Biography of the Gintsburg Family (1898). There are also materials pertaining to Harkavy’s work-related activities at the St. Petersburg Public Library such as reports on operations for particular years; notes; and correspondence, including letters to Harkavy from numerous well-known Jewish figures; business correspondence with Jewish communities and organisations; postcards and calling cards [bound into special notebooks constituting approximately 2,500 storage units]; congratulatory salutations on the occasions of jubilee dates of the collection creator; etc. Some of the texts contain Arabic in Hebrew transcription.

The Orientalist, Semitologist, researcher of Jewish history and literature, and public figure Avraham Harkavy (1835-1919) was born in the town of Novogrudok (Minsk province) (now a city in the Gomel’ region, Belarus). He originally received a traditional Jewish education in a cheder and the Volozhin yeshiva. He graduated from the Vilno Rabbinical Seminary (1858) and St. Petersburg University (the Department of Oriental Studies). After a period of training in universities in Berlin and Paris (1868), he received St. Petersburg University’s chair in the History of the Ancient East (1870), but was forced to quit teaching in light of the Board of Trustees’ refusal to appoint a Jew as professor at an imperial university. He earned his doctorate in 1872. From 1877 to the end of his life, he served as director of the St. Petersburg Imperial Public Library’s Department of Jewish Literature and Eastern Manuscripts.
He authored numerous works on the history of the Jews, Khazars, and Karaites, on Jewish literature, etc., including “On the Language Used by Jews Living in Rus’ in Ancient Times, and on Slavic Words Found in Works by Jewish Writers” (1865); “Jewish Writers’ Narratives of the Khazars and Khazar Kingdom” (1874); “Essays on the History of Karaitism” (1897-1902); and commentaries to Jewish and Karaite manuscripts. As one of the founders of Judaica’s Petersburg school, he laid groundwork, in particular, for Russian Jewish paleography and epigraphy. Harkavy was elected a full member of a considerable number of Russian and foreign scholarly societies and institutions, including the Society for the Promotion of Culture among the Jews of Russia (OPE), and he was one of the founders of the Jewish Historical-Ethnographic Society; he was also active in the Petersburg Jewish community. He died in Petrograd.
