Shtern asking that he assist a Jewish matriculant, who had been subjected to discrimination, to enrol at Novorossiia University; etc.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- This was founded in Odessa in 1839. It conducted research on the history, archaeology, and ethnography of southern Ukraine (Novorossiia), Moldavia, and Crimea – regions with a significant Jewish population. It performed archaeological excavations, folklore expeditions, and historical-archival surveys, and assisted in augmenting the municipal museum of antiquities. Certain of the society’s archaeological, archaeographic, historical, and demographic-statistical materials are Judaica-related. The society was in operation until 1922; in 1923, the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences’ Odessa Regional History Commission was organised; this entity (which would be liquidated in 1931) took over jurisdiction of the society’s archival materials.
