Iampol’skii, etc.); correspondence with official institutions on Jewish students’ residence rights, on issuing them various certificates to defer their military conscription requirements, etc.; clarifications on restrictions pertaining to the enrolment of non-resident Jews whose parents did not have Kiev residence rights; and a request submitted by Kiev Rabbi S. K. Lur’e to the school’s director asking that Jewish students be excused from classes on Jewish holidays.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- This was opened as a co-educational institution by the Kiev branch of the Imperial Russian Music Society in January 1868. Originally it offered secondary musical training, and from 1874-83, a general education; and it was considered one of the country’s best music schools. From 1883 on, its curriculum consisted of six years. The school was reorganised as a conservatory in 1913. Jews made up a considerable number of the school’s pupils; its charter contained no percentage restriction on Jewish admissions, but due to the fact that only certain categories of Jews had Kiev residence rights, the school freely admitted only Jews whose parents were official city residents. Other Jews who passed entrance exams could receive Kiev residence on an individual basis, via petition of the school’s board and with the consent of the governor-general, governor, and police. Local philanthropists provided material assistance to Jews who could not afford tuition.
