- Included are lists of persons (including Jews) who ran bookbinderies in Kiev; signed statements by Jewish press engravers regarding their professional activities, and a copy of a log of the Kiev Provincial Administration including discussion of whether Jewish typesetters had Kiev residence rights (1887); information on Kiev Rabbi S. K. Lur’e’s intention to open a private Jewish library (1904), and a notification about the banning by the head of the Kiev Military Area of the printing or distribution of any Yiddish- or Hebrew-language publications within the area (1915). There is also a copy (seized from a private distributor) of the Moscow illustrated magazine Evrei na voine [The Jew at War] (no. 6, 1915); and several issues of the Alphabetical Indices of Books and Pamphlets and Issues of Periodical Publications Ordered to be Sequestered by Court Rulings (1914-16), which among other things contain data on Jewish periodicals and other Jewish-themed publications.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The post of inspector of printing presses, lithography houses, and the Kiev book trade was introduced in 1886 as a local office of the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ Main Administration for Press Affairs. The inspector monitored the operations of institutions engaged in printing, lithography, photography, etc.; and oversaw the manufacture of typographic stamps, the operations of libraries, and the retail trade and distribution of books; and it received and distributed locally the Main Administration’s lists of works and publications (in particular, Jewish works or works on Jewish subjects) allowed by the foreign-publication censorship, or to the contrary, banned by court rulings. The inspector received circulars and memoranda pertaining to the distribution of Jewish publications, and to the activities of Jewish tradesmen working in printing presses and lithography houses in Kiev. The Main Administration for Press Affairs and its local entities were dissolved in the spring of 1917.
