- Among materials included are county solicitors’ reports on the incorrect apportionment and levying of taxes from Jewish townspeople of the town of Skvira (1808) and the city of Uman’ (1824); complaints filed by representatives of Jewish communities regarding the “burdening of the homes of poor Jews” with military billeting; correspondence on the need to establish a synagogue in Kiev (1831); files on attacks by unknown persons on Jewish families; petitions by Jewish converts to Christianity for freedom from serfdom; court agencies’ reports on Jewish converts to Russian Orthodoxy who had turned back to Judaism; etc.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The office of the Kiev provincial public prosecutor was introduced pursuant to the Regulation on the Provinces (1775) and was under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Justice. The Kiev provincial public prosecutor monitored the strict implementation of laws; the conduct of legal procedure; operations of provincial and county institutions; and the condition of prisons. Serving under this official as assistant public prosecutors, were provincial solicitors for criminal and state cases; and also county solicitors, in charge of prosecutorial oversight in the counties. The office of provincial public prosecutor was dissolved in 1880.
