- Included are personnel files of Jewish staff members of the commission; information on partisan detachments’ medical and sanitary services (which included numerous Jewish doctors, nurses, and pharmacists), and on groups of demolition experts and encampments of Jewish families in the territory of the Rovno and Volhynia regions; minutes of interrogations and write-ups of forensic analysis on the destruction of the Jewish population: information on ghettos and labour and concentration camps in the territory of Transnistria and the L’vov, Ternopol’, and Stanislav (Ivano-Frankivsk) regions; details on shootings and the destruction of corpses, and on forced labour in Baudienst and Todt entities; information on hunger and the denial of medical care suffered by Jews in camps and ghettos; surnames of victims and of war criminals; descriptions of the behaviour of victims and executioners, and of the organisation of shootings of Jews by SS military personnel and German and Ukrainian policemen; orders of the occupation authorities and military commandants’ offices on the status of Jews, and on punitive measures against the local population for violations of orders pertaining to Jews; minutes of questionings of Jews and Holocaust witnesses from among other nationalities; recordings of recollections of partisans and underground activists on the fate of Jews and cases in which Jews perished or were saved; materials reflecting the evolution, in official Soviet propaganda literature, by which the terms “Jews” and “Jewish population” transitioned to the terms “noncombatant population” and “noncombatant Soviet citizens,” and indicative of how information on certain events connected with the destruction of Jews in the territory of Western Ukraine was suppressed; etc.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- This collection was created by the Commission on the History of the Great Patriotic War, which had been organised by the Ukrainian SSR Academy of Sciences in January 1944. Beginning in July 1944, this commission had the status of an independent organisation; in 1965, it became part of the Ukrainian SSR Academy of Sciences’ History Institute. It gathered and systematised documents on the history of the Second World War in the territory of Ukraine and prepared these materials for publication.
