- Certain of the fond’s materials reflect nongovernmental contacts between Ukraine and Israel. Among these are letters of the Israel-USSR Friendship Movement inviting representatives of the Ukrainian SSR to take part in events commemorating the anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany (in particular, mass demonstrations at the monument to Soviet warriors in the “Soviet Army Forest” near Tel Aviv), and in Israel-wide rallies for supporters of friendship between Israel and the USSR; information of the presidium of the Israel-USSR Friendship Movement on meetings, lectures, exhibits, and symposia held, and on a regional rally of movement activists and reports delivered thereat (1964); a list of persons present at a press conference of representatives of the Israel-USSR Friendship Society in Kiev (1965); and correspondence on sending Ukrainian literature and recordings of Ukrainian music to Israel, as well as materials for exhibits on Ukrainian history and contemporary life and on the work of the Ukrainian writers Taras Shevchenko, I. Ia. Franko, Lesia Ukrainka, and others.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- This was established in 1926 as the Ukrainian Society for Cultural Ties Abroad. Its purpose was to organise nongovernmental international contact and raise public awareness in the Ukrainian SSR of the life and culture of other peoples; and also to disseminate information abroad on the life and culture of the Ukrainian people in line with Soviet ideology. In 1959 it was reorganised and renamed the Ukrainian Society for Friendship and Cultural Ties with Foreign Countries. The society’s activities were monitored and coordinated by the Union of Soviet Societies for Friendship and Cultural Ties with Foreign Countries, based in Moscow. Public organisations for friendship with particular countries functioning in the territory of the Ukrainian SSR answered to the Ukrainian Society for Friendship and Cultural Ties with Foreign Countries in turn.
