Also included is information on the size, leadership, and legal status of the Kherson Jewish community; correspondence on an inquiry regarding procedures for electing religious leaders in Jewish communities; a request by a representative of the Odessa Main Synagogue for permission to acquire linen in Moscow for making tallits and for vestments for the cantor and choir; materials appended to Rabbi A.-L. Vaisman’s application for appointment as the Department of Non-Orthodox Christianity and Heterodoxy’s rabbinical expert; correspondence on marriage between Jews and persons of other confessions, and also certificates issued by the Department of Non-Orthodox Christianity and Heterodoxy on this subject, reversy, i.e., obligations assumed upon marriages between Jews and Lutherans to raise children in the Lutheran faith; the charter of the Kiev Community of Jewish Evangelists, and correspondence on entitling this community to keep vital records independently; information on Ukrainian, particularly Kievan, Karaites; etc.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- This was formed in May 1918 under the Hetmanate of P. P. Skoropads’kii established in Ukraine in April of the same year; it was based on the Department of Religious Confessions organized earlier by the Ukrainian People’s Republic’s (UNR) Ministry of Internal Affairs and preserved in the original structure of the Ukrainian State’s [Ukrains’ka derzhava] Ministry of Internal Affairs. It implemented state control over the activities of religious institutions, communities, and associations. Along with other structures, the ministry included a Department of Non-Orthodox Christianity and Heterodoxy, section 2 of which held jurisdiction over Jewish religious communities (upon the liquidation of the Ministry of Jewish Affairs in July 1918, its authority was assumed in part by the Ministry of Religious Confessions). After the December 1918 coup by which the Ukrainian Directorate came to power, the Ukrainian State’s Ministry of Religious Confessions was succeeded by a ministry of the same title in the new UNR government.
