- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Moscow Branch of the All-Russian Society for the Protection of the Health of the Jewish Population was established in 1914 as a regional branch of the Society for the Protection of the Health of the Jewish Population (OZE), which arose in 1912 in Petersburg and which sought to care for children and improve the healthcare of the Jewish population, and their sanitary and hygienic living conditions. In particular, during the Civil War, the Moscow branch of the Society for the Protection of the Health of the Jewish Population organized detachments of specialists and sent them to Ukraine to provide material, food, and medical aid to Jewish refugees and to the local Jewish population having suffered from pogroms and military operations. The charter of the Moscow branch of the OZE was approved by the RSFSR Council of People’s Commissars in 1918, and its activities were coordinated with the RSFSR People’s Commissariat of Health and the Moscow City Department of Health. However, in June 1920, the Jewish Public Committee to Aid Victims of Pogroms (Evobshchestkom), established by the Soviet authorities, absorbed both the OZE and the Jewish Committee for the Relief of War Victims (EKOPO), with which the OZE had been coordinating its activities. And although both of these organizations soon withdrew from the Evobshchestkom, they were officially closed in 1921.
