- Scope and content:
- A number of files pertain to relations between, on the one hand, the counts Plater, other gentry landowners and their employees, and on the other, Jewish communities. These include an excerpt from Ovruch castle books [grodskie knigi] for 1774 with a listing of privileges granted by Count. M. Brzostowski to the Jewish kahal of the town of Dombrovitsa (granting the right to maintain a synagogue, bathhouse, rabbi’s residence, cemetery, commercial institutions, etc. for a fixed payment to the count’s estate); a complaint of the Dombrovitsa kahal to the Rovno County Court regarding the systematic violation of these privileges by the town’s new owners, the counts Plater (who imposed extra taxes on Jews’ commercial operations, forced Jews to buy goods on the count’s estate, imposed a “cart” tax, unfairly distributed the quartering of troops, etc.); and a subpoena of Count I. Plater in connection with a lawsuit brought by the Dombrovitsa kahal. There are also materials on the income and disbursements of the Dombrovitsa kahal; information on this kahal’s debts to the Pinsk Carmelite Monastery; documents on liquor licences farmed out to Jews, and Jews’ contracts for the rental of inns; and inventories of the estates belonging to the counts Plater, with data on the makeup of their population by religious confession.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Platers de Broel family of counts dates, per certain sources, to the twelfth century. The family originated in Westphalia, where they owned the Broel castle; they subsequently resettled to the Baltic region. They occupied prominent posts in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. From the eighteenth century, members of the Plater de Broel family owned significant properties in the territory of Ukraine; in particular, they acquired Dombrovitsa county, with the town of Dombrovitsa (Brest wojewodship; currently the city of Dubrovitsia, Rivne region), from Count. M. Brzostowski. After the third partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, these possessions became part of the Russian Empire, and their owners, the Platers, were accorded the rank of counts of the Russian Empire.
