- Among materials housed in the fond are files on Jews being baptized; on persons of other faiths converting to Judaism; on landowners’ incorrectly registering the children of Jewish converts to Christianity to an estate subject to the poll-tax; and on Jewish converts to Christianity petitioning to be granted corresponding rights; on Jews hiring Russian Orthodox peasants for household work; on Jews accused of sacrilege; of opening unauthorized houses of worship; and on the unlawful instruction of Jewish children by melameds (in the city of Uman’). A whole set of documents pertains to economic relations in one way or another involving the Jewish population: files on Jews being permitted (or forbidden) to lease liquor licenses (these contain, in particular, license agreements in Polish signed by Jewish licensees, with translations into Russian); on Jews’ violations of their brewery rental obligations and of rules of the liquor trade; on the imposition of fines on Jewish kahal members for violations of kosher meat delivery contracts; on complaints filed by Roman Catholic parishes of the Kiev province against local kahals for violations of contracts for the delivery of candle tallow and wax to churches; and files pertaining to Jews’ requests for permission to live on land leased from landowners and engage in farming. There are also complaints by Jews regarding affronts perpetrated on them by government officials in the course of the hearing of their cases in the chamber; a communiqué of the Boguslav City Municipality to the civil department of the Kiev Main Court requesting clarification of whether Jews were entitled to be called as witnesses in the absence of Russian Orthodox peasants to bear witness; files on the ratification of Jews’ last wills and testaments; etc.
