- Materials housed in the fond, in Russian, Hebrew (signatures) and Polish (with a Russian translation), contain records, books of edicts, logs and minutes of provincial magistrate session. They include information on the Jewish population of the town of Iuzvin (until 1757, the village of Selishche, Vinnitsa starostwo, Bratslav wojewodship) per the land inventory [liustratsiia] of 1765 (population numbers; property status; living conditions, which were worsened due to a fire; and excise payment amounts); petitions of authorized agents (including two Jews) of residents of the town of Iuzvin, and these agents’ warrant of power of attorney in the case of the residents’ complaint regarding infringement of their rights and liberties as townspeople, granted by August III in 1757, on the part of landlords [posesorowie] and the starosta Potocki; a register of lower village courts [raspravy], city municipalities, and “oral” [slovesnye] courts to be opened throughout the Bratslav province, indicating the residents (both Christians and Jews) of particular areas these institutions were designated for, and a report on the opening of city municipalities and orphans’ courts [sirotskie sudy], with signatures of Jewish rada members; names and signatures of Jewish associate judges of provincial magistrates; mentions, in logs of sessions of the Bratslav Provincial Magistrate, of the associate judge Leib Berkovich (in connection with a file on the payment of associate judges’ salaries), who had concluded a contract with the city duma to maintain taverns and who in doing so had allegedly committed abuses; and of two Jews, city-dwellers of Ovruch, whom the county seat administrator [gorodnichii] had enlisted to stand guard outside the prison in lieu of the regular detachment, which had not yet been set up. There are also provincial magistrates’ instructions to lower courts in the exercise of supervisory powers in cases involving Jews, particularly, in the case (previously heard by a rabbi) of mutual accusations between Litin county resident Abram Shapovich (Avrum Shapshovich) and Tsakha Duvidovich, a tavern-keeper he had hired, concerning embezzlement, failure to pay amounts owed, and robbery (the instructions were that Shapshovich be freed and compensated for the offense caused him, with a comment that the Litin City Municipality had overstepped its authority in taking him into custody, and had in doing so been in violation of provisions of the Regulation on the Administration of Provinces); in the case of elections for the new mayor of Khmel’nik; here the provincial magistrate returned to that city’s duma the candidacy-approval certificate it had submitted to the magistrate, on the grounds that this document had been signed only by the “community of the Christian law,” and demanded that a candidate be selected by both Christian and Jewish communities, insofar as the provincial magistrate was aware of the existence in Khmel’nik of the latter; materials on Jews accused of theft, robbery, harbouring thieves and robbers, causing property damage, violating rent conditions, and failing to fulfil contracts and pay debts (including a report of the Bratslav City Municipality on the case of a debt owed by the Jewish community of the town of Krasnoe to the landlord [posesor] Vasilevskii); etc.
