- Some of the documents and fragments (in Polish with Latin elements and Russian) housed in the fond pertaining to the activities of the Kiev Border Commission reflect the involvement of the Jewish population of border regions in frontier disputes; and how Jews were affected by the spreading haidamak movement and by measures taken by the Polish and Russian governments to counter it. Among these are “claims points” [punkty pretenzii] of Polish border judges and relevant resolutions; findings and judgments of the Russian side; complaints of estate managers, starostas, and individual Jews; and other documents containing information on attacks on and looting of Jewish homes and taverns in towns and villages by haidamak detachments and groups, theft of livestock and mockery, torture, and murder of Jews (including complaints regarding a haidamak attack on the town of Navoloch’ with a list of thirty-five Jews killed there and an appraisal of property plundered from them); on robberies of Jewish merchants on the roads; on the flight to Left-Bank Ukraine of persons in debt to Jews, including a ruling in the case of Hirsh Abramovich, a resident of the town of Shklov, who, owing a large sum of money to a Jewish resident of the town of Glusk, had fled to Kiev, where he had converted to Orthodoxy and received the protection of the Kiev Municipality; testimony of arrested haidamaks on their intent to enter the “Polish region” to rob rich Jews and Polish nobles, and on their carrying out these intentions; registers of property plundered from Jews, and of damages they had suffered; documents on cases of failure to repay debts to Jews, residents of Right-Bank Ukraine, and Russian subjects; failure to fulfil contracts; and unlawful confiscations of goods from Jews at Russian border customs points; and information on analogous cases regarding claims from the Russian side; documents on the lawsuit of Jewish and Christian residents of the Liubar klucz (privately-owned estate lands, in this case in rural areas of Zhitomir county, Kiev wojewodship) against Crown Army Lt. Gen. Jerzy-Marcin Lubomirski and his subordinates regarding violence and destruction wrought during the collection in this klucz of unlawful exactions, taxes, and contributions toward maintaining the army, including “claims points” on behalf of individual Jews and from the whole Liubar kahal with a list of damages and a description of the excesses that accompanied the quartering of troops (Jews being beaten; placed in a ditch and smeared with manure; and forced to work, including on the Sabbath); and inventories with information on the Jewish population of the cities of Troianov, Staryi and Novyi Chudnov, Stary and Novyi Liubar, Kanev, Bar, etc. There are also references to sessions of on-site courts taking place in Jewish homes.
