- This collection consists of papers, manuscripts, pamphlets, letters, newspaper clips, and documents related to chief rabbi Gottlieb Klein. It includes the following: documents from 1872 to 1873 concerning the Mosaic Congregation’s discussion on a potential name change; court records from 1856 regarding the penalty for individuals destroying the Northern Cemetery; copy of minutes from one of the Mosaic Congregation’s lay leaders’ board meetings in 1895 regarding the congregation’s keeping of church books (membership books); the Mosaic Congregation’s leaders’ questions on Gottlieb Klein’s thoughts on matters of the torah, and questions of the Israelitiska Sjukhjälps- och begravningssällskapet on Gottlieb Klein’s thoughts on cremation; documents from 1883 to 1891 related to the collection of money for Russian Jews through Alliance Israelite Universelle in Paris; letters from B’nai B’rith (international organisation strengthening Jewish identity) in 1912; documents from 1780 to 1824 gathered by Herman Kahn; various ketubah (marriage contracts) and halitza (manumissions from marriage) from 1780 to 1826 in Hebrew; two addenda to ketubah from 1824 in Hebrew; undated family letters from Copenhagen in Hebrew; parts of a testament of H. Schück; copy of the Swedish king’s resolution giving Gumpet Hirsch and his sons, Joseph Marcus Levin, Isac Marcus and Jacob Marcus the right to trade in 1787; grades from 1827 and baptism certificate from 1829 belonging to Moritz Jacobson/Moritz Meyer Jacobson; obituary of Moser Moritz Schönthal from 1886; letter to Marcus Zacharias in Visby; protocols from various divorces from the 1890s; baptism certificates from 1890s; publication of banns from 1890s; documents related to Mendel Rubesohn from 1906; various documents in Hebrew; and Nathan Lipinsky’s account “Min resa till Sverige”; a photograph of Aron Kahn, the first Jew born in Stockholm in 1784.

- This collection was transferred by the Jewish community of Stockholm to the Swedish National Archives in 1979.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Gottlieb Klein was born in Homonna, Hungary, in 1852 and died in Stockholm in 1914. He attended Talmudic studies in Eisenstadt, theological studies in Mainz and Frankfurt am Main, university studies at the University of Heidelberg, University of Berlin and the Hochschule für die Wissenschaft des Judentums in Berlin, received his PhD from University of Heidelberg in 1873, and became a rabbi in 1877. He worked in Schüttenhofen and Elbing before becoming chief rabbi in Stockholm in 1883. He preached in Swedish, organised services on both Saturdays and Sundays, and had many close relationships with Swedish intellectuals and academics. He married Antonie Levy in 1879. He was also invited to Uppsala University for guest lectures.
