This collection is part of the Jewish community in Stockholm’s records on their population between 1822 and 2000 (SE/RA730128/02), including collections on members, non-members, births, confirmations, marriages, deaths, funerals, and people moving in or out of Stockholm. The records often include information on nationality, family members and professions as well. This specific collection concerns the deaths and funerals of both Jewish individuals who were members of the Jewish community in Stockholm between 1921 and 1946, as well as those who were not members. Membership in the umbrella organisation Mosaiska församlingen (Mosaic Congregation) was only granted to Jews with Swedish citizenship, which means that every individual listed as a member of the Mosaic Congregation in this collection was also a Swedish citizen.
The death and funeral book is printed in Swedish and filled out in Swedish by hand in ink. The handwriting is easy to read. The death and funeral book has printed columns for entering the following information on each deceased individual: the number of deceased community members for each year, the date of death (month and day), the deceased’s membership or non-membership of the Jewish community (the deceased’s gender is also noted in this column), the name (first name, any middle names and surname), employment and home address of the deceased, the deceased’s date of birth (year, day and month), the marital status – unmarried, married, widowed or divorced – of the deceased, the deceased’s information page in the Jewish community book, the cause of death, the medical certificate of death (issued by either a doctor or a midwife), the place of death, the date of the funeral (month and calendar day), and lastly, notes. This last section holds information on, for example, the name and position of the specific doctors issuing the medical certificate of death, the information given by the Jewish community to local parishes, the use of cremation or the body’s transportation to another city. The collection is chronological and divided into years, with the year noted on top of each page. The death dates of the deceased individuals within each year can, however, vary. The collection consists of 150 folios. It is available at the Swedish National Archives’ site in Arninge in Stockholm; it cannot be consulted on the archive’s website. The collection can also be viewed on microfiche at the Swedish National Archive.
- Archival history:
- The material in this collection was created by the Jewish community of Stockholm and transferred to the Swedish National Archives in 1979.
- Administrative/biographical history:
-
This collection was created by the Jewish community council in Stockholm, which was led by communally elected board members of the umbrella organisation Mosaiska församlingen (Mosaic Congregation). These board members were often individuals of high socio-economic rank, both within the Jewish community itself and the larger Swedish society.
The population records date from 1822 to 2000. They include information on members, non-members, births, confirmations, marriages, deaths, funerals, and people moving in or out of Stockholm. The population lists were drafted, and names were added over time. In some cases, they were rewritten to allow for better representation and ease of reading.
