This collection is part of the Jewish community in Stockholm’s records on their population between 1822 and 2000 (SE/RA730128/02), including collections on members, non-members, births, confirmations, marriages, deaths, funerals, and people moving in or out of Stockholm. The records often include information on nationality, family members and professions as well. This specific collection concerns engagements and marriages among members of the Jewish community in Stockholm between 1946 and 1958. Membership in the umbrella organisation Mosaiska församlingen (Mosaic Congregation) was only granted to Jews with Swedish citizenship, which means that every individual listed in this collection was also a Swedish citizen.
The community divided their population lists into members and non-members, and this one includes only members of the Mosaic Congregation. This collection of engagements and marriages is written in Swedish. The book itself is printed in Swedish and it is filled out in Swedish by hand with a grey ink pen. The writing is cursive, but never unreadable. The engagement and marriage book has printed columns for entering the following information on each engagement and marriage: the number of marriages within the Jewish community in that year, the date for the publication of banns, information about the married couple (surname, first name, employment, home address, nationality and religious affiliation), the date (year, day and month) of the couple’s births, the page number of the couple’s information in the community’s membership records, information on the couple’s engagement and marriage (such as place and date for the publication of banns, as well as the religious office announcing the banns), the nature of the civil marriage, date of marriage (month, year), the number of marriages the couple has been in before, the presiding office at marriage (the name of the rabbi, the Magistrate of Stockholm or the Senior Enforcement Officer), and notes on the couple’s Jewish community membership, payment for marriage, nationality, premarital settlements, religious education for future children, place for engagement or marriage, or possible later divorce, as well as information on the Jewish community’s provision of marriage information to the parish records. The records of engagements and marriages are structured according to years, starting with 1946 and ending with 1958. The engagements and marriages are mainly listed in chronological order, with some exceptions. The collection consists of 100 folios. It is available at the Swedish National Archives’ site in Arninge in Stockholm, but cannot be consulted digitally on the archive’s website. The collection can also be viewed on microfiche at the Swedish National Archives.
- Archival history:
- The material in this collection was created by the Jewish community of Stockholm and transferred to the Swedish National Archives in 1979.
- Administrative/biographical history:
-
This collection was created by the Jewish community council in Stockholm, which was led by communally elected board members of the umbrella organisation Mosaiska församlingen (Mosaic Congregation). These board members were often individuals of high socio-economic rank, both within the Jewish community itself and the larger Swedish society.
The population records date from 1822 to 2000. They include information on members, non-members, births, confirmations, marriages, deaths, funerals, and people moving in or out of Stockholm. The population lists were drafted, and names were added over time. In some cases, they were rewritten to allow for better representation and ease of reading.
