This collection is part of the Jewish community in Stockholm’s records on their population between 1822 and 2000 (SE/RA730128/02), including collections on members, non-members, births, confirmations, marriages, deaths, funerals, and people moving in or out of Stockholm. The records often include information on nationality, family members and professions as well. This specific collection concerns the birth of children to members of the Jewish community in Stockholm between 1895 and 1925. Membership in the umbrella organisation Mosaiska församlingen (Mosaic Congregation) was only granted to Jews with Swedish citizenship, which means that every individual listed in this collection was also a Swedish citizen.
The community divided their population lists into members and non-members, and this one includes only members of the Mosaic Congregation. This collection of birth records are written in Swedish. The birth book itself is printed in Swedish, and it is filled out in Swedish by hand in ink. The birth book has printed columns for entering the following information on each child: the date (year, month and day) of the child’s birth, if the child was born alive or dead, the gender of the child, the child’s first and middle names, the first names, middle names, surnames, maiden name, employment and date of birth (year, day and month) of the child’s parents, the status of the child’s mother (married, widow or divorced, engaged or unmarried), the page number in the community book where the child is mentioned, the date of a male child’s circumcision and further notes. The section on notes sometimes include information on the religious affiliation of the child’s parents, the geographical location of the birth of the child, certificates from stillbirths, and notifications of the child’s birth by its parents to the Jewish community. If one of the parents was a member of the Lutheran church it is noted here.
The birth records are structured according to years, starting with 1895 and ending with 1925. The children born are mainly listed in chronological order, with some exceptions where the parents of the child did not report the birth until a few months later. The collection consists of 66 pages, and it is available at the Swedish National Archives’ site in Arninge in Stockholm, but it can also be consulted digitally on the archive’s website. The collection can also be viewed on microfiche at the Swedish National Archives.
- Archival history:
- The material in this collection was created by the Jewish community of Stockholm and transferred to the Swedish National Archives in 1979.
- Administrative/biographical history:
-
This collection was created by the Jewish community council in Stockholm, which was led by communally elected board members of the umbrella organisation Mosaiska församlingen (Mosaic Congregation). These board members were often individuals of high socio-economic rank, both within the Jewish community itself and the larger Swedish society.
The population records date from 1822 to 2000. They include information on members, non-members, births, confirmations, marriages, deaths, funerals, and people moving in or out of Stockholm. The population lists were drafted, and names were added over time. In some cases, they were rewritten to allow for better representation and ease of reading.
