This collection is part of the Jewish community of Stockholm’s main records (SE/RA730128/01), which comprises collections related to the community’s legal, organisational, religious, cultural and political matters. This specific collection contains minutes, with attachments (for example: letters, bills, calculations and budgets, reports, memos, architectural designs, telegrams and petitions), from council and annual general meetings between 1782 and 1979. These meetings discussed and decided on a range of issues connected to the Jewish community of Stockholm, for example the employment of teachers, choir singers and rabbis, the construction of synagogues, the delegation of work to individuals outside the Jewish community, and the provision of scholarships and alms to community members and smaller Jewish religious groups in Stockholm.
All but the first four volumes of the 149 volumes concern one calendar year each, covering April to March/April in the years 1839-1875 and January to December from 1876 and onwards. While the first volume includes papers received by the Jewish community between 1782 and 1796, the following three volumes hold minutes from various yearly intervals between 1807 and 1828. Each council or annual general meeting has its own entry in the minutes, divided into various sections that correspond to the subjects discussed during the meeting. Each section is noted and thematised in the margins. The discussion or decision taking place during each section is often stated matter-of-factly and sometimes include personal opinions or motivations. The attendance and preferences of the Jewish community’s leaders from 1807 and 1979 are, on the other hand, meticulously noted in this collection, including well-known leaders such as Arthur Fürstenberg, Gunnar Josephson and Fritz Hollander. The attachments are, however, often written by individuals and can therefore reveal information on communal matters beyond the council’s decisions. The attachments include petitions and letters by congregants as well as foreign Jewish leaders. Board members in attendance are always listed for each meeting; community members are included for most annual general meetings.
The minutes are either written by hand or typed, written in Western Yiddish (using the Hebrew alphabet) until March 1839. German is used for the period between April and December in 1839, while Swedish is used for all minutes from 1840 onwards. Minutes from other community agencies are also included in this collection. The taxation committee’s annual report, including lists of community members, is published from 1883 and onwards, but information on taxation matters is also included in the directors’ minutes between 1839 and 1882. Likewise, papers from the election committee, formed in 1934, are included. Although a collection solely focused on the Boy’s School exists in the archive, this collection holds minutes connected to the Jewish school between 1846 and 1853.
- Archival history:
- The material in this collection was created by the Jewish community of Stockholm and transferred to the Swedish National Archives in 1979.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- This collection was created by the Jewish community council in Stockholm, which was governed by communally elected representatives who appointed the members of the executive board. These board members were often individuals of high socio-economic rank, both within the Jewish community itself and the larger Swedish society. Minutes from the council in Stockholm exist from 1807 until 1979 in this collection, although earlier examples might have existed. The council’s minutes are based on discussions and decisions taken during council and annual general meetings. They were drafted, concluded and written by the board’s secretary. All council and annual general meetings for each calendar year are collected in chronological order into a volume with hard covers.

A detailed index of the minutes from 1839 to 1979, in four volumes, made by the Jewish Community is held in the archive (reference no. SE/RA/730128/01/A/A_1/A_1_b (Judiska församlingens arkiv, Huvudarkivet, A1: b)).
The entire collection has also been indexed by the archivists Lars Hallberg and Mikaela Nybohm of the Swedish National Archives. The index can be found in a folder at the archive and in the archive’s database NAD (Nationell Arkivdatabas).
