The fonds covers all amendments of the Ministry of the Interior. The additions include fragments set aside after the processing of other fonds, various collections and gifts. They are only a fraction of the fonds of the Ministry of the Interior, part of the materials of some departments of the Ministry of the Interior, and affiliated commissions. The fonds only slightly supplements the file materials from 1918-1938. The supplements for the period of the Nazi occupation illustrate some political relations for the years of 1938-1939. The rest consists of books, registry finding aids, and filing registers from 1945-1953.
Jews are specifically dealt with in the background material from the State Statistical Office, which contains a list of foundations, racial affairs for the district, county, provincial and state establishments, materials for the reorganisation of the Supreme Jewish Council (a memorandum from Uzhorod), and materials from 1938-1939 concerning measures against Jews and illegal crossings.
- Archival history:
- The documents of the Ministry of the Interior from the period of 1918-1948 were handed over to the Central Archives of the Ministry of the Interior and the State Central Archives between 1928 and 1974. In 1953 and 1954, the organisation and appraisal of file material began. After 1954, the appraisal was stopped due to the importance of the fonds. The material, transferred to the State Central Archives, is complete and closed.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Act of 2 November 1918 established the Office for Internal Administration, which was renamed the Ministry of Interior on 18 November 1918. The organisational structure of the ministry was formed by the presidium, departments, sections and auxiliary offices. After the adoption of the Act on the Organisation of Political Administration in 1927, the powers of the presidium were extended, for example, to representational and disciplinary matters, internal organisation of the service, management of official lump sums, etc. During the Nazi occupation, the competences of the Ministry of Interior were changed by orders of 15 January 1942. From the Ministerial Council presidium were transferred to the Ministry of Interior such important matters as the organisation, legislation and public employees. The Commission for the Streamlining of the Public Administration and the Planning Commission for Prague and its Surroundings were also subordinated to it.
