- The estate of Dr. Emanuel Schwab is important especially for various aspects of the medieval history of Jihlava, with an extensive collection of transcripts and copies of sources of domestic and foreign archives related to Jihlava. Jewish-related material can be found in the paper on the work by B Bretholz, ‘Geschichte der Juden in Mähren’ [History of the Jews in Moravia], draft, circa 1934.
- Archival history:
- Emanual Schwab himself added transferred this collection to the Jihlava City Archives at the end of World War II. The fonds was organised in 1954 and 1966.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Dr. Emanuel Schwab came from an old family of hereditary mayors. He was born on June 23, 1874 in Kunštát, but the family soon moved to Jihlava. From 1893 to 1897 he studied law at the University of Vienna and from 1897 to 1899 he was a student of the Institut für österreischische Geschichtsforschung. On May 7, 1901, he graduated Doctor of Law, then joined the archives at the Haus-, Hof- und Staatsarchiv in Vienna. In 1922 he was prematurely retired and moved to Jihlava. There he devoted himself exclusively to historical work which focused mainly on the city of Jihlava, where his German nationalism manifested itself and he tried to prove that Jihlava had always been a German city. He died on November 27, 1945, before being deported to Germany, in a camp for sick persons.
