- Archival history:
- In the past, the fonds suffered numerous losses, mainly as a result of a fire in 1947. In 1949, the State Archives took over the fonds together with the Archives of the Šariš County. After being taken over, an appraisal, organisation and inventorying of the fonds was carried out, and in 1963 a finding aid was created. In 1987, 1989 and 2005, some minor acquisitions were included in the fonds, which is now classified as organised.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- After the temporary restoration of constitutionality in 1860-1861, the county board were dissolved and the county self-government was abolished. The principal county head as the principal county vice-governor, or the royal commissioner, became the highest public authority with extensive powers in all areas of social life. He was directly subordinate to the central Hungarian authorities. He worked in the territory of Šariš County in 1861-1867. After the Austro-Hungarian settlement, the function of the principal county head, who was appointed and removed by the sovereign at the suggestion of the minister of the interior, was restored again. He was the official representative of all the branches of state administration on the territory of the municipalities, the intermediary between the central state administration and the municipal self-government, and ex officio the chairman of all important county boards and committees. This function ceased to exist in 1919 by merging the functions of the principal county head and the deputy county head in a single function of the appointed county head. This function ceased to exist at the end of 1922, when the existing counties were abolished and reorganised.

- System of arrangement:
- The fonds is a part of the Šariš County fonds, which is further divided into two subdivisions: the Principal County Vice-Governor and the Principal County Head, both being divided into presidium and administrative parts. The presidium agenda of the Principal County Vice-Governor is arranged in chronological-numerical order for the period of 1862-1863. Later documents are arranged according to the original breakdown by groups. The administrative part is organised according to the original system of arrangement into several groups the number of which was changing in the course of time. The presidium documents of the Principal County Vice-Governor are arranged in chronological-numerical order. This procedure also applies to the series from later years, which, though divided into presidium and confidential series, was arranged in the above mentioned manner.
