- The fonds contains documents relating to the self-government of Spiš towns. Information on Jews can be found in civil disputes. Relevant documents are: The opening of a Jewish pub in Ľubica (1850); The Jewish school (1863); Prohibiting Jews from using double surnames (1864); The Statutes of the Autonomous Jewish Communities in Hungary (1871); A request for the support of the Jewish school in Spišské Podhradie (1876).
- Archival history:
- The documents were deposited in the County Archives in 1785. Later, they were moved several times from Spišská Nová Ves to the County Archives in Levoča and back again. The documents were finally taken over by the County in 1876 when the Province ceased to exist. The fonds began to be organised together with other documents deposited in the County Archives after being taken over by the State Archives. In 1969-1979, the fonds was inventoried.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- In 1412, thirteen Spiš towns were attached to Poland as collateral for a loan. The towns were returned to Hungary as late as 1772. Nevertheless, the Province continued to have some self-government, and in 1774, the autonomous Province of XIII Spiš Towns was established. It was headed by the provincial earl, who was elected by the reeves and the representative of each town. In 1776, three more towns were added and the Province of XVI Spiš Towns was established, being independent of the Spiš "Stolica" (region) and administratively subordinated directly to the Governor's Council. The status of the Province changed in the time, its activities being gradually limited, the provincial earl being appointed by the monarch, and the judicial authority being withdrawn. In 1876, the law ordered it to merge with Spiš County.
