The fonds concerns the activities of the municipal notary office in Nitra, which had authority over the territory of the city of Nitra and its inhabitants regardless of nationality and religion. Given the large Jewish population and its significant share in the economic and public life of Nitra, items of Jewish interest can be found throughout the fonds.
Presidium documents are preserved from 1923-45. These are principally statistical reports, the most important of which is the list of wealthy Jews living in Nitra in 1938. Items of Jewish interest are also presumed to exist in other lists including information on history and economy, such as statistics of enterprises important for state defence (1927, 1937) and statistics of the city of Nitra (1930), the list of pharmacists (1926), and statistics on motor vehicles (1926). Relevant information can also be found in the report on the city’s economic situation (1932).
Documents concerning political affairs include information on the activities of political parties, such as the situation reports on their activities (1925). This group also includes documents related to elections to the municipal council (1932, 1938), the district council (1928, 1929, 1934), the county council (1924), the provincial council (1928), and the national assembly (1925, 1929). There are also numerous documents on celebrations of state holidays, co-organised and attended by representatives of local Jewish communities. These documents are mainly related to the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic and the birthday of the president (1928, 1930, 1932).
Items of Jewish interest may also be found in separately stored groups of documents from various periods, such as mobilisation matters (1934-44) and civil anti-air defence (1935-36).
Further information regarding Jews can be found in the reports of higher instance authorities. They include a report on the districts of rabbinates in Slovakia (1928) and on the banishment of Jews from Austria (1938).
- Archival history:
- In May of 1956, the fonds was taken over by the predecessor of the institution where it is now. Only part of the fonds, mainly the presidium files, has been preserved. The administrative files have not been preserved. An internal appraisal was carried out in 1960, when the fonds was also organised and inventoried. In 1958, a list of the sources of the history of the labour movement and the Communist Party was compiled, and in 1960 a finding aid was created.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The function of the municipal notary in Nitra, which was included in the category of large municipalities, was established on 1 January 1923. The role of the notary was to perform the state administration. Even though he was not a member of the local council, he was obliged to attend the meetings of all self-government bodies with the right to suspend, and appeal against any resolution. The Municipal Notary Office in Nitra ceased to exist in March of 1945. The notary offices were abolished by the regulation of the Slovak National Council of 7 April 1945.
