The fonds contains documents of the municipal office of the city of Nitra (1923-44) and the Nitra city office (1944-45). The office had authority over the territory of the city of Nitra and its inhabitants regardless of nationality and religion. Given the large number of Jews in the city and their significant engagement in the economic and public life of Nitra, items of Jewish interest can be found throughout.
Administration books include the minutes of the municipal council of Nitra from 1923-40, the council board of Nitra from 1922-23 and the financial committee from 1920-40. Within the register books are registers of domicile certificates (1924-40), registers of members of the city residing abroad (1926-40) and records of members of the municipal council, the municipal council board and the general commissions (1931-33).
Relevant material in the fragmentarily preserved presidential files includes documents relating to the affairs of the city's employees (1923-38) and property matters of the city's inhabitants (1925).
Within the administrative documents, items of Jewish interest are mainly found in the domicile agenda (1923-38), trade certificates (1938), building permits (1938), inn licenses (1938), and election files (1938).
Much Jewish-related material can be found in documents concerning the establishment of Czechoslovakia, deposited within the administrative files from 1938. They deal with the activities of the Hungarian National Council, members of which included several Jewish inhabitants of the city of Nitra. They also concern the activities of Jewish associations and professional organisations in which Jews held important positions. These documents also include references to Jewish religious communities in Nitra and Jewish entrepreneurs.
It is also possible to make use of the birth and marriage register documents from 1923-38.
A special section of the fonds includes documents of the police department of the city of Nitra. Only register books and fragments of files have been preserved from its registry. Relevant material is mainly found in register books, namely the register of tradesmen from 1925-41 and the register of printers' offices from 1935-42.
Several records of the Jewish inhabitants of the city can also be found in the two-volume chronicle started in 1935, which also contains additional records. The chronicle forms a separate unit but will be merged with this fonds.
- Archival history:
- The fonds suffered great losses in 1950, when a large amount of the administrative documents and police files were destroyed without an appraisal having been carried out. In May 1956, the fonds was taken over by the predecessor of the institution where it is now. The fonds was organised in 1956-1957, when an appraisal was also carried out. In 1958-1965, finding aids were created. The inventory supplements were made in 1993 and 1995. At present, the fonds is classified as fully inventoried.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The creator was established on 1 January 1923 under the name of the Municipal Office of the City of Nitra. In 1943, it was renamed the Municipal Office in Nitra. It had authority over all persons residing in the city and their property. The Office was headed by the mayor, and since 1940, by the government commissioner. The elected self-government bodies also participated in the municipal administration: the municipal council, the municipal council board as the executive body, several municipal commissions, and the mayor of the city. The Municipal Office ceased to exist during the war in March/April of 1945.
