The documents concern the territory of the District Notary Office in Jelenec, dealing with all aspects of its social development. There are documents related to political life and elections, issues of individual municipalities within the district (e.g. domicile affairs) and various inventories and lists. Due to the permanent presence of the Jewish population in the district, items of Jewish interest may be found in several types of documents, including the minutes of the municipal council of the municipality of Jelenec from 1892-1943. Information on Jewish inhabitants may also be found in several registers, particularly the book of domicile certificates (1922-24), the register of issued municipal certificates (1923-36), the register of members of the municipality of Jelenec (1929-40) and the register of tradesmen of the municipality of Jelenec (up to 1941).
The presidium files have been preserved from 1922-45. Important documents are mainly those concerning all types of elections from 1923-38 and various financial collections (including gold reserves from 1923 and the state defence loan from 1936).
Administrative files have been preserved from 1900-44. Information on Jews is most likely to be found in several types of lists, such as the register of voters (1894), the list of citizens paying the highest taxes (1903, 1906), the list of farmers, landowners and tenants (1918), the list of households (1919), the permanent register of voters (1920), the list of vine-growers (1923), and the list of inn and pub licences (1938).
The economic activities of the Jewish population are recorded in numerous documents concerning tenancies, farming and the division of Karol Forgach's estate in the 1920s. Items of Jewish interest are also likely to be found in documents marked domicile affairs (1911-38) and register matters (1921-23).
Jewish-related material can also be found in some reports of higher authorities of a more general nature, such as those concerning the establishing of the Jewish Party in Czechoslovakia (1920).
- Archival history:
- In 1955, the fonds was taken over by the predecessor of the institution where it is now. In 1959, an appraisal was carried out, the fonds was inventoried, and finding aids were created. At present, the fonds is classified as fully inventoried.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The status of the municipal notary had been defined since 1871 by the law pursuant to which he was a full member of the municipal notary with the right to vote, maintaining all the agenda as a self-government official. The District Notary Office in Jelenec had authority over the municipality of Jelenec, where it was seated, and the municipalities of Kostoľany pod Tribečom, Kolíňany and Žirany. Until 1922, it was part of Nitra District, and between 1923 and 1945 it was part of Zlaté Moravce District. Within these two districts, it belonged to Nitra County. In 1920, the notary became a civil servant with the right to veto resolutions of the municipal council. The Notary Office in Jelenec ceased to exist in March of 1945. The notary offices were officially abolished by the regulation of the Slovak National Council of 7 April 1945.
