In general, the fonds may be used for researching land-related matters, property rights and conditions of the municipalities of the Galanta District, and for genealogy research and business research. There are a large number of documents relating to the Jewish population which can be found in four subject groups.
The first subject group is the contracts (Z) divided into several subgroups. One of the largest subgroups is family law contracts (Z 1). They include marriage contracts (Z 1.1) from 1891-1900 where a relatively high number of Judaica can be found (e.g. Anton Grünzveig from Vlčiany and Sali Sternová from Veľké Úľany). The subgroup of dowry contracts (Z 1.2) from 1898-1900 includes individual Judaica, e.g. an acknowledgment of the dowry of Ilona Friedliebová from Šala by her husband, Ignatius Weisz.
Another subgroup includes inheritance contracts (Z 2) from 1891, 1896 and 1898-1900, waivers of inheritance in particular, e.g. the waiver of Sali Lőwingerová, née Weinbergerová, in favour of her siblings.
Several types of contracts can be found in the subgroup of substantive law (Z 3). There are numerous sale and purchase contracts (Z 3.1) from 1891-1900 there, including contracts concluded by Jewish owners, e.g. Frída Rosenfeldová, née Weissová, from Bratislava, selling lands in Horná Králová to Isidor Weiss. Among the gift agreements (Z 3.3) dating back to 1892-1900 there are several agreements related to Jews, e.g. Fani Steinerová, née Figdorova, from Bratislava and the lands in Tešedíkov. Such documents can also be found among the conveyancing contracts (Z 3.5) from 1891-1900, e.g. the transfer of ownership rights in several municipalities by the representatives of the Sugar Factory and Distillery in Sládkovičovo, Hirsch Kuffner and David Gutmann, to Viliam Kuffner and Ľudovít Gutmann, the representatives of the Association for the Production of Sugar and Spirits in Sládkovičovo. Judaica can also be found among the contracts on the right of use (lease contracts - Z 3.7) from 1892, 1895 and 1898, such as the lease of lands in Dolné Saliby by Eduard Hazai (Herschler) to his daughter Serena.
There is also a separate subject group labeled other contracts (Z4). Thematically important are, in particular, promissory notes and debts (Z 4.1) from 1893 and 1898-1900, among which there is, for example, a contract for the payment of the debt by Ž. Stern to the administrator of his bankrupt estate in Veľké Úľany and several promissory notes, e.g. in favour of Regina Weiszová. In the group of guarantee contracts (Z 4.2) there is a contract concluded between Zigmund Haás from Vienna and Teodor Steiner from Galanta on the sale of grain of Fanni Steinerová from Galanta from 1898. The only sale contract preserved in the fonds (Z 4.3) was also concluded by two persons. There is one construction contract (Z 4.4) from 1900 concluded between Jakub Spitzer and N. Jakub Löwenbeer from Topoľčiany concerning a company dealing in beer. There is also one contract for service and one employment contract (Z 4.5) concluded between Mori Kohn, the owner of the fashion store in Galanta, and Alexander Kovács (1900).
Another large undivided group consists of testaments (T) from 1891-1891 among which testaments drawn up by Jews can be found, e.g. the testament of M. Lichtman from Galanta.
Another large subject group also contains testimonies (S) which are divided into six subgroups. All of them include references to Jews. From 1898-1890, there are authorisations of signatures (S 1), e.g. that of Gerson Stern, and powers of attorney (S 2), e.g. that of Jakub Rozner. Judaica can also be found among the financial statements (S 3) from 1898 and 1900, e.g. a statement by David Kann and Jozef Wetzer from Dunajska Streda about taking money from the Bratislava Savings Bank for the purpose of delivering it to Jakub Spirzer in Topoľčiany. Other subgroups include the records of taking over and sending letters (S 4) from 1898-1900, e.g. Dávid Löwinger writing on behalf of the Löwinger Jakab fiai Comp. to Žigmund Haas from Vienna in the matter of grain sale. Notices, filings and records (S 5) have only been preserved from 1900, e.g. a record of the sale of barley by Teodor Steiner from Galanta to Žigmund Haas from Vienna.
A special subject group consists of deposits (D) which have only been preserved from 1889 and 1900. Some Judaica can be found among them, e.g. a contract for the custody of the testament of F. Weisz and his wife from Tešedíkov.
- Archival history:
- The fonds was separated, along with other collections from the activities of public notaries, from the fonds labeled the Galanta District Court. This fonds was taken over, in 1960, by the predecessor of the institution where it is now. It is the largest archive collection from the activities of public notaries in Galanta. It is currently classified as fully inventoried.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Alojz Gyuracskay was the second public notary in Galanta. He entered the office in August 1891 and left the job in 1919. The status of public notaries in Hungary was for the first time defined by Act no. XXXV/1874 which finally came into force on 1 August 1875. The territorial jurisdiction of public notaries was the same as that of the district courts. Their authority included issuing public document, dealing with testaments, testimonies, custody of documents, inheritance matters, and later also matters of guardianship and others.
