The District Trade Association in Šaľa was an organisation with district jurisdiction whose authority concerned all traders operating within the territory of the Šaľa district, regardless of their nationality and religion. Considering the number and continuous presence of the Jewish population in the territory of the Šaľa district and its considerable proportion among the traders, a sizeable number of Judaica are presumed to be found in the fonds.
From this point of view, official books are useful. They include minutes of general meetings of the District Trade Association from 1925-1937, minutes of general meetings of the department of the Pub and Café Keepers from 1931-1932 and 1936-1937, minutes of committee meetings of the District Trade Association from 1925 and 1928-1939, minutes of meetings of the department of the Traders from 1931-1938, the register of the employees of the traders from 1898-1925, the register of the issued apprenticeship certificates from 1923-1942, the register of traders from 1928-1938, and others.
The administrative files have been preserved since 1907-1950. Each year of the files is divided into subject groups. The organisational matters include memoranda and circulars of superordinate institutions, decisions on opening apprentice schools in individual municipalities, lists of apprentices, resolutions, minutes, annual reports, statutes and organisational statutes of other district and central trade associations, and others. Thematically significant in this subject group are especially lists of craftsmen and traders, lists of traders and craftsmen dependent on the public support, particularly from the 1930s, lists of dealers in general goods and flour in Šaľa district from 1935, an application for providing support to M. Löwinger from the municipality of Vlčany from 1937, and a list of pub keepers who did not have the right to sell spirits from 1938. The subject groups including apprenticeship contracts, apprenticeship certificates, journeymen’s exams, and opening shops and workbooks, have the same structure of records in the registry finding aid. They include the first names and surnames of the traders, the place of their operation and the trade specification. Some years also include concession documents, or trade notices. In all the groups there are numerous Judaica, the most numerous being in the subject group concerning opening shops (e.g. A. Eigner, trader in Šaľa from 1932), concessions (e.g. M. Freund from Močenek, a concession for operating pubs and inns from 1930) and trade notices (e.g. T. Weisz from Šaľa, a dealer in cloths and textile from 1935).
- Archival history:
- The fonds was taken over in 1955 by the predecessor of the institution where it is still stored. Acquisitions were taken over in 2003. At present, the fonds is classified as fully inventoried but the finding aid is available in a provisional form without an introduction.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The trade associations were public corporations with private legal status which brought together the traders and their assistants within individual districts. They began to be established at the end of the 19th century. After the establishment of Czechoslovakia, the Austrian laws then in force in the Czech lands were also applied in the period of 1918-1924. The new Trades Licensing Act of 1924 extended the competencies of trade associations and granted them the right to participate in the trade agenda. On the basis of this law, in 1924, the District Trades Association was established in Šaľa with competence for all the municipalities in the political district. The administration and management of the Association was carried out by the elected General Assembly which was headed by a chairman. After the annexation of the Šaľa district by Hungary as a result of the 1st Vienna Arbitration in November 1938, the Association operated under changed legal conditions. After returning the Šal'a district to Czechoslovakia in 1945, the operation of the Association was resumed. It ceased to exist in 1950 when its authority was taken over by the economic department of the District National Committee in Šal’a.
