The documents of the fonds concern the activities of the District Court in Galanta. They concern all persons and institutions regardless of nationality or religion within its area of competence. Due to the continuous presence of a large Jewish population, numerous Judaica are presumed to be found.
The first handling period is from 1872-1898. In the groups of the documents, Judaica are presumed to be found especially among official books, namely in the register of verification of statements, write-offs and extracts from business books from 1871-1903 as well as in two volumes of advance deposits from 1872-1896. The presidium files have been preserved from 1872-1897. Thematically significant are mainly dispute matters (e.g. S. Stern from Galanta, 1878) and documents concerning the recovery of financial claims (M. Goldberger from Galanta, 1879, I. Adler, 1888, and M. Guttmann, 1889). Other groups of documents include the seizure issues No. II from 1874-1896 with gaps where there are decisions on seizures, the indisputable civil cases No. II from 1863-1897 (with gaps), where there are significant wills and records on the estate of the deceased, and finally the criminal cases No. III from 1887-1894 (with gaps).
The second handling period covers the years of 1898-1914. From among the official books it is possible to use in particular an extract from business and credit books from 1904-1921 and two volumes of deposit records from 1906 and 1909-1912.
Judaica have been preserved especially in the files. It is a group of the presidium files from 1905-1910, but what is particularly important is the group of civil disputes from 1898-1909 where one can find, for example, disputes over the use of immovable property (M.D. Weisz, 1898), recovery of financial claims (A. Herschler from the municipality of Dolné Saliby and S. Neufeld from Galanta, 1898, Armin Weisz from Galanta, 1902, and M. Adler, 1905), or rulings on repossession of things (e.g. A. Singer from Tomášikovo, 1909). The group of files concerning the estates of the deceased from 1898- 1914 is only accessible in the finding aid by means of registration numbers of the files without any content. In the group of criminal files (1898-1914) there are mostly judgments on financial compensation for serious bodily harm.
In the third handling period (1914-1924) it is possible to use mainly the files. The highest number of Judaica can be found in the group of civil disputes from 1915-1924 which includes, for example, inheritance disputes (A. Adler from Galanta 1915), recovery of financial claims (L. Eisenberg from Šala, 1916, and Š. Hirschler from Šala, and many others). Another usable group is the files concerning seizures of property from 1922-1924, especially the records of the property seizure proceedings (against S. Weil from Jánovce, 1922, Armin Weisz from Galanta, 1923, I. Marmorstein from Sládkovičovo, 1924, and many others). Even in this handling period there is a large group of files concerning estates of the deceased from 1915-1924 which are only mentioned in the finding aid in the form of registration numbers without any content. The group of criminal files has been preserved from 1915-1924. It mostly contains judgments on financial compensation for serious bodily harm (e.g. Rozália Frankolová from Sládkovičovo, 1917, and D. Löwinger from Čierny Brod, 1920) as well as documents on other matters such as thefts due to poverty, murdered newborns, organising unauthorised political assemblies, embezzlement of public money, and others.
From the fourth handling period (1924 - 1938), it is also possible to use the files.
There is a special group of civil disputes from 1924-1924. They include, for example, decisions on maintenance duty, recovery of financial claims (V. Guttman from Galanta, 1925, the Bernáth and Edmund Klug Comp. from Sereď, 1932, A. Friedmann from Sereď, 1933, E. Fleischmann from Senec, 1934, and many others), and relieving movable property from charges (J. Sonnenfeld, Sereď, 1934).
The group of non-disputable civil matters from 1924-1938 mainly includes recording property rights, expropriation of lands, notice sheets, but also a notice served on A. Adler about termination of his farming contract on the estate of Senec (1924).
In the property seizure files from 1924-1938 one can find decisions on various seizures of property (e.g. against Armin Weisz from Galanta, 1924, A. Wetzer from Sereď, 1934, E. Weisz from Sereď, 1936, J. Goldschmidt from Sereď, 1938, and many others).
A large group of files concerning estates of the deceased from 1924-1938 as well as criminal files from 1924-1938 are listed in the finding aid by registration numbers without any content.
The fifth handling period covers the years of 1938-1944, and the sixth the years of 1945-1949.
What is thematically usable is especially the files No. 4 concerning land books (1924-1938, with further continuation), which contains resolutions of the district court on the recording of the rights of ownership on the basis of a purchase contract, a gift contract, an exchange contract, a decision on inheritance, the seizure of property, the recording and expungement of a lien, the division of the community property, and reaching majority age. The files are mentioned in the finding aid only by registration numbers without any content.
- Archival history:
- In 1972, the fonds was taken over by the institution where it is still stored. The supplements were accessioned by the archives in 2000, 2002, 2003, 2011, 2014 and 2015. In 2000, the fonds was inventoried. Adding the supplements meant that the fonds is currently classified only partially inventoried. The non-inventoried parts are arranged.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- District courts in Hungary were established on 1 January 1872. One of them was the Galanta District Court whose jurisdiction covered the territory of the Galanta District, and since 1923 the territory of the Galanta Political District. The District Court was a court of first instance, with jurisdiction in civil matters, extra-judicial matters (e.g. trusteeship), bankruptcy matters, criminal matters, general matters, and the agenda of land books. The District Court in Galanta did not cease to exist after the Czechoslovak Republic came into existence in 1918, and not even after its annexation by Hungary as a result of the 1st Vienna Arbitration in November 1938. It also continued to exist after its reintegration into the Czechoslovak Republic in 1945. In the period of 1872-1938 it was subordinate to the Regional Court in Bratislava.
