- Scope and content:
- The documents of the fonds concern the municipality of Šurany and deal with all aspects of its social development. They are not specifically focused on Jewish issues but the information of this kind can be found across the entire fonds, given the high number of the Jewish population in Šurany. The minutes of the meetings of the local councils from 1898-1944 and the local board from 1924-1938 are of special significance. Judaica can mainly be found in numerous register books. They include 2 register books of traders from 1919-1946, 9 register books on the acquisition of the right of ownership from 1890-1944, 2 undated register books of land deeds, a list of the members of the voluntary fire brigade from 1920-1940. It is also necessary to mention two undated cash books: the cash book of Adolf Klein's assets and the cash book of the Jewish assets. Among the administrative files, the documents labeled trade matters that have been preserved from almost every year are particularly useful. There is also an important list of the members of the Jewish religious community from 1929 and the information on the construction of the steam bath by the Jewish religious community from 1936.
- Archival history:
- The documents of the fonds have been preserved since 1881. The missing part of the archive collection is presumed to have been destroyed during the Second World War. In 1953, the fonds was taken over by the District Archives in Šurany where an appraisal was carried out in 1955-1957. In 1963, the fonds was completely inventoried and partly catalogued. In 1966, the fonds was taken over by the District Archives in Nové Zámky, i.e. the predecessor of the institution where the fonds is now.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Notary offices evolved from the position of the notary who was originally a non-public contractual person. From the beginning of the 1870s, the position of the local, or district notary was defined by the law. The notaries were regular members of the local councils with the right to vote, keeping all the written agenda for them as self-governing officials. The oldest documents in the fonds have been preserved since 1881 but the Notary Office had been active even before then. The authority of the Office covered the municipality of Šurany. In 1920, the notary became a civil servant with the right to veto the resolutions of the local council. The Notary Office in Šurany remained active even after the annexation by Hungary after the 1st Vienna Arbitration in November 1938, but ceased to exist in 1945. The existence of notary offices was officially ended by the Regulation of the Slovak National Council of 7 April 1945.
